Default Coronado, La Jolla, Del Mar, Encinitas?/

Hi,

Contemplating a move to San Diego Area. Have been thinking about it since June or so. Want to be on the coast. Can only afford 1100. for 1bdrm. (Sounds unreasonable but that is what I can do right now) Need good school. (Middle to High) Checked out the aboves.
I am a hairdresser and want to work m-f 9-5.The above towns seem to be 9's or 10's on the school ratings.

? Are all these towns heavy tourism?
? Which are more accepting of new comers 11 yo child to school. (really important)
? Which is less transient. would like her to meet and keep friends.

But really need to work in the town we live.

I think a tourist area I can work the hours I need and make $$ right away. But I want a community that is somewhat diverse (in all aspects), accepting of newcomers (heavy boston accent) and not too transient, and preferably smaller population. Preferring a liberal community that oozes tolerance.

I really am interested in Coronado because it looks small (easy to walk to school etc). I have been looking for 1100. apt hard to find.

If I can get negatives or positives on these communities, especially coronado (what is the feel of the people that live there?)

Ps: What is Del Mar's High school?? It doesn't look like it has one.

Thanks for any replies!

Yes

All

All are very established.

You are talking about some of the wealthiest areas in the country. For 1100 you will most likely be living in a studio or 1BR apartment.

Thanks for the info!!!!!!

I know 1100. wont get us much but really really need great schools and it is pretty sad that the majority of the great schools happen to be in the richest (in $$) communities.

Well, keep checking craigslist, they seem to have more non-commercial listings that are a bit less expensive. I suppose Pacific Beach is close enough to La Jolla, there might be more there for you.

Sometimes you can find bargains in places that are within easy travelling distance to the beach, but not right on top of it.

You don't need to live with the elite to have good schools. Poway, RB, RP, are much more middle class and still have good schools.

I disagree. If you want "the best" you need to live with the best. Move to Torrey Pines HS district. Don't settle for anything less than your desires.

I enjoyed living in Coronado, and lived closed enough to the elementary school to walk to it, however, you may be hard pressed to find a 1-bedroom for $1100. It isn't impossible, though. About 5 years ago or so, my husband (before we were married) rented himself a small 1-bedroom for less than $1000 on Coronado Island...so you never know! It's very easy to get around Coronado, and I enjoyed walking/riding my bike around that area. The people aren't overly friendly, though. My husband had several friends that lived in Coronado at one point, but by the time we were married, most, maybe all, had moved away. Somewhat transient area (especially with the military base nearby), unless you are a millionaire or don't mind renting forever. I would think that people seem to settle down more in the Poway, Rancho Bernardo, etc., areas. Not a big deal...you can always drive off the island and see friends elsewhere if you do settle into Coronado. Besides, people love coming over there and going walking, going to the beach, etc.
