I was working in my office yesterday when I heard my wife and one of her friends talking about a tragic accident that happened near our house last week. My wife's friend is acquaintances with the family of the child in the accident as they live here in our development.

I read the story online and it's incredibly sad. Thank God the child survived, although in serious condition, it seems like a miracle the baby survived. Sadly the nanny died in the accident.

They have set up a Memorial Fund for the nanny that died so it would be great if people could give what they can. She had 2 kids. You can make it at any Wells Fargo Bank. Just tell them it's for the “Monserrat Mendez Memorial Fund”.

Just a really really sad story.

This is very sad.
My heart goes out to all families of this tragedy.
It will interesting to see if the driver get jail time.
From my understanding(hasn't been confirmed yet) she was either talking or Texting on her cell phone.
I travel that road twice a week sometimes three, and i always wondered why the speed limit so high in this area?
There's construction going on nearby and people are still speeding!

I totally agree hitman. I was also curious to see what will happen to the driver that killed the nanny. I saw on the SD County Press Release it says she ran the red light.

County of San Diego: Press Releases

There was another death back in 2011 on Camino del Sur and that guy only got 30 days in jail. He was going about 85 miles an hour in that case.

You're totally right about how fast people go on that road. Most times people are going about 80 MPH+. People almost treat it like a highway. I used to ride my bike on that road to the bicycle path on I-56 but stopped because most times people aren't paying attention and going super fast on that road. I've seen many people texting while driving on that road.

Even in that area where you mentioned near Del Sur where they are doing construction people don't care and go fast. Although I did notice they put up an electronic sign now showing how fast you are going so maybe that will slow people down.

I'm not sure the driver in this case will even get jail time. It sounds like she just had a baby a few days ago. I'm sure she must feel terrible as well. It would be hard to go through life knowing you killed someone.

Man, I feel sad for everyone involved in this. Looks like the woman who was driving had given birth the day before this accident.

Also, police have determined that she was not on a cell phone during the accident and was not speeding. She is accused of running a red light, though.

Yes, I do feel sad for everyone involved but I feel like this driver that KILLED another human being has to be held accountable for this tragic accident. I do realize it was an accident and she didn't intend to kill them but everyone needs to be held accountable when they make mistakes like this and take another life.

I'm sure the driver feels horrible, especially being a new mother. That's part of the story I don't understand. Who drives around 1 day after giving birth? I don't know about her but most reasonable people that I know that give birth to a baby certainly aren't driving around 24 hours after they just gave birth. Oh well... different strokes for different folks I guess.

I'm just glad the baby survived. It was a small miracle the baby wasn't critically injured. The family lives here in my development here in Santaluz and there were so many neighbors that wanted to send flowers or gifts for the baby and the family just requested in lieu of any gifts to just donate to the Fund set up for the deceased Nanny.

I'm sure the family of the deceased nanny will (or has already) filed a wrongful death civil lawsuit against this woman and I hope they get a small fortune to help this woman's kids.

Just a tragic situation and makes you realize how quickly your life can get taken away at any time.

Yeah ER, good question.

So for the mothers out there: Were you ok to drive the day after giving birth?

The drugs should have mostly worn off, right, but wouldn't you be a little exhausted to get behind the wheel?

Most mothers I've known just hang out with the newborn for a week or so and don't go anywhere.

LOL....I was at Disneyland the day after I gave birth to our youngest daughter! I gave birth at around 11 am, at Fountain Valley Medical Center. Was home by 6 ish that night with baby. Never slowed me down! Of course, I was young and stupid!
