That really comes down to what you consider nice. I'm just guessing by the name that you are from Chicago. (Sorry if I am wrong.) There are tons of nice neighborhoods all over the city. There is only two streets that I wouldn't hang around, and that's only at night! Sorry to seem so vague, but our city strives hard to maintain a safe and clean core, and has succeeded very well at it. Heck, I can think of neighborhoods that are within 50 miles of the downtown area that I would still recommend to everyone.
Now for the money issue. Within your price rang you will find something comfortable. But remember, if you are from Chicago, the neighborhood that you are moving from that had half a million dollar homes in it, is not the same in San Diego. Sure you will find something nice, BUT PLEASE!, do not be one of those people that complain because they spend 500k on a three bedroom two bath, single story, and can't live like you did back in wherever. Good Luck |

With the recent decline in housing prices from the peak (about 15% - so far), there are now many decent neighborhoods where you can get a 2/1 house, and possibly a 3/2 house. At this point we would need for you to explain further what attributes a nice town or neighborhood would have.
For some people nice is all about the schools, or the crime stats, for others it's about architecture and walkability, and for still others it's vibe, culture and entertainment. |

No, we are well aware of California prices. We will most likely be moving to Sacramento in the spring. We were curious how the prices are holding up in socal. We're not moving for the big house ...we have that in Chicago...we want the California weather.
We love San Diego, but are not that familiar with neighborhoods. |
