But I do! For steaks, Janet's Montana Restaurant in Alpine.
For great outdoor ambiance and a good menu, try the restaurant (the outside section) at the Sycuan Golf & Tennis Resort on Dehesa Road (not the casino). It's open to non-members.
The Downtown Cafe in El Cajon. Nice mixed menu, usually well-prepared, and a peaceful courtyard with a fountain in summer, and heaters in winter (less peaceful when they have live entertainment, but they have pretty good bands, and people actually get up and dance ). Next door is a Mexican restaurant that is supposed to be good, but I haven't eaten there yet.

I ate there yesterday for the first & last time and thought it was definitely over-hyped. Apparently the lobster was delicious but has not been on the menu for about a year, too bad cause it sounded good. I tried a Wasabi Shrimp Burrito (shrimp were okay but reminded me of that Chinese dish with shrimp & walnuts, kinda plain burrito with just shrimp, lettuce, some cheese and weak sauce). Fish tacos grilled and fried I ate one bite of each and tossed, fish was not good quality and corn tortillas were too thick. Chile Relleno was massive but didn't look very good, pepper and cheese were not bad but I don't like Relleno's with really thick batter which this one had. Flan was pretty thick and no special taste to it. Thumbs down for me. Who has good Mexican in this town?

On the weekends they take some of their meats and put them in a smoker out front and smoke them all for 8-12 hours in this massive custom made trailer smoker. It's great with an excellent flavor and a thick honest to goodness smoke ring on the meat; the down side is they don't sell portions and instead the only sizes they offer are whole cuts of meat (like a whole brisket or a whole tri tip, etc...).

Best Mexican in this town (okay, I'm going to stretch "this" town) is La Placita, on the east side of the zocalo in Tecate.

Which El Zarape? The one on Park Blvd I like, nice burritos and such. The one on Adams? Not so much.

I ate at the one on Adams last year, and the meat in my burrito wasn't exactly cooked.

I don't recall exactly. One located on the corner maybe, in North Park. I may have been to both.

It's on a corner of Adams Avenue in Normal Heights. It wasn't very good.

Yeah, there's a HUGE difference between that El Zarape and the El Zarape taco shop on Park. The one on Adams does, however, make a very nice michelada and they show all of the futbol games in the bar, so it's at least good for somethin'
