Hi,

I'm moving to the Carlsbad area (husband transferred to Camp Pendleton) and looking for elementary schools. I've heard that the Carlsbad and Encinitas schools are good by California standards, but still almost a grade behind Virgnia, so I'm looking at private in my options. Is the commute from South Carlsbad/Encinitas to, say Children's School in LaJolla simply undoable? (Sounds like it, from other posts.) Does anyone know anything about Encinitas Country Day? Or, any good scoop on the publics? I've heard that some of the public schools do not have art, music and/or PE regularly . . . and I have given up expecting a foreign language.

Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Kamber

If you can find a place in Cardiff by the Sea (part of Encinitas) you will find the best elementary schools--it's a small district with only 2 schools, one K-3, the other K-6. The junior high is also really great, and the high schools are top notch. Some say that the Encinitas schools (elementary) are hit and miss, but Cardiff is superb. Carlsbad is mixed, and the H.S. really can't compete with La Costa Canyon/San Dieguito Academy/Canyon Crest Academy, all of which are public school options if you live in Cardiff or Encinitas. But your housing money will go much further in Carlsbad.

Public school is dictated by where you live. But the private school options for elementary the Grauer School , Rhoades School, Encinitas Country Day School are k through 8. La Costa Valley Preschool & Kindergarten for preschool and kindergarten (carlsbad/encinitas) or Gifted Pre-School are options

I know this is a very old thread but I'll comment anyways, in case someone decides to do a search...

Encinitas District and Carlsbad District Elementary schools are now considered very good across the board. In Carlsbad you can generally expect a higher student/teacher ratio, I've heard 30:1 to be about average for elementary. Encinitas is a smaller city with class sizes reflecting this, 20-23:1 is supposedly the range of average. The Encinitas High schools are also considered top notch don't know much about the Carlsbad ones.
