Echo42's description of Chula Vista and its east-west dynamics is spot on. Comments regarding the differences in Mexican nationals living in town are also correct, although I was under the impression that the wealthy ones still came from BC and Sonora and not DF.

Generally speaking, the west side of Chula Vista will be one of the most affordable areas in San Diego County to live that is also decent. Places like National City, Encanto, Otay Mesa, and San Ysidro will be cheaper, but even people from Chula Vista consider those areas the "ghetto." In all of these areas, $1800/month inclusive is going to be pushing it for a house. Apartments are a non-starter because you have more than 2 cats, so don't even bother with them. Even for a house, you probably will have to find homes for 3 of them.

The west side of Chula Vista has good and bad parts, but my general advice would be to stay north of L Street and east of Broadway. The areas right along the 5 freeway are more hit-or-miss, as are the neighborhoods south of L Street.

Most good computer-related jobs are going to be in Mission Valley, Sorrento Mesa, etc. All of those areas are a long drive from CV during rush hour. You might be able to find some affordable housing in inland areas like Lemon Grove and El Cajon, but they suffer from some of the same problems that afflict Chula Vista. Plus they will be hotter during the summer and further from your husband's workplace.

Just like I said:

This is true, and my suggestion is to stay where you are.
