Just to show that crime can happen anytime and anywhere in San Diego, a 62 year old was killed in his apartment and last night a guy opened fire on 6 people, killing one. Police shot and killed him on 805. Both of these incidents were in Normal Heights.

It seems that whenever there is one homicide in San Diego, it is followed by some others within a short time period. When it rains, it pours. Otherwise, it will be quiet for a long time.
As far as Ancourage goes, I haven't heard anything about how the crime rate is. Some people believe that cold weather can drive people into a homicidal rage, but I don't think that is entirely true. Weather may be a small factor in addition to more important issues such as economics (poverty) and culture. One factor that may cause Ancourage to be dangerous during the winter is long periods of night with little or no daylight. Then again, if it's TOO cold why would anyone want to go out and commit crimes rather than just stay home?

Wasn't 2000 one of the better years in San Diego?

2000 had a low homicide rate county wide. But that was when auto theft was one of the worst cities nation wide, graffiti was everywhere and the start of the school violence trend.Plus factor in the drug trade and the slide of the SDPD,I don't think 2000 was that great. But hey,way safer than STL Baltimore,Detroit I suppose.
BTY-sorry for the double post;my computer was actin up.

You're right about when it rains, it pours. It showed clearly right after the homicide-free streak when there were 4 slayings within a couple hours of each other.
JKSouthBay, there was something about another guard in North County, I think it was in Oceanside. At first I thought it was the same story. LOL
The thing I've heard about Anchorage is they have a "gang problem". Not sure how true this is. Then in the same breathe, it's of course blamed on people from California who moved up there. Also, crime rate is based on per capita, so that's also a factor.

The incident that ended in a police shooting was not in Normal Heights. It was in City Heights according to SignonSanDiego.

There is a gang problem in San Diego. If you don't live in an area with an active street gang, you may not know it. Know the areas you're headed to and don't be folly with your personal security. Don't let this deter you, San Diego is a great city.

The news get it mixed up all the time. I stay right off of El Cajon Blvd and plenty of times I've heard it considered City Heights even tho its technically Normal Heights

ESD born and raised:Yeah it's shameful how the people's source(the news)messes up and often. They call Palm Avenue SR-75 being in "Chula Vista"spell Eastlake East Lake, and claim that SDSU is in the east county. They should just forget where things are and name the nearest arterial intersection so it doesn't confuse people.Example:Imperial Avenue@Euclid instead of Lincoln Park.Cities like LA,Chicago,Vegas, and Miami do that in there news broadcast and not one news station here does that!
