They routinely confuse Normal Heights, North Park, Talmadge, Rolando, Darnall, City Heights, College Area, Colina Del Sol, even La Mesa. It's not limited to the UT, NC Times, even the TV news does it. San Diego has always been second-rate media market - I think the people who write the crime blotter are just very green.

Stay away from areas close in to the east and south of cintral S.D. North S.D. county is your best bet if safety is a concern. I've lived there 5 years without a problem. Note: Oceanside does have a gang problem; the city is working on it hard. Ten miles north and west of S.D city and beyond would be my choice. Not La Mesa or El Cajon to the east.
Our ghettos are called barrios, but not all are bad, and not as extensive as in eastern u.s. cities. Some have 2nd and 3rd generation residents.

La Mesa and El Cajon have some bad areas and some very nice areas. I'd encourage people to check out La Mesa, esp. North of the 8. But you will need at least 1K per month to find a relatively safe and clean efficiency apt.

Yeah I don't get that statement. La Mesa has some great neighborhoods both North and South of 8. El Cajon is a bit dicier but has some great 'hoods (i.e. Fletcher Hills), Norm lives in Escondido which, to me, is about the same deal.

For the past few months, the articles I've read have mentioned the closest intersection to where a particular crime took place. I just think they name the area because they didn't have all the information yet and didn't update the article.
I think alot of the online articles are just thrown together in a couple minutes.

i remember one of those newspapers guys was coming through my block blasting music at 5 in the morning. That lasted a good two days before he was pulled out his car in the middle of the street, pistol whipped, and they took his ride.

Yeah, my brother lives right off the 805 on Boundary St & Adams Ave. There's a few problems in the area, but overall in San Diego, Normal Heights is a pretty safe area. A day or two before that, there was a helicopter right over my bro's apartments looking for two murder suspects, later they took over a Carls Junior on El Cajon Blvd.
San Diego is on the top 10 safest cities in the U.S. But, bordering Southeast San Diego is National City, one of the most dangerous cities in the U.S. for murders, car theft, and drug movement. Also, Chula Vista, Otay Mesa, Mira Mesa, Vista, Oceanside, and Escondido have crime/gang problems.
Just like the city (not county) of Los Angles, there is a small area in the city "South Central Los Angeles", known as a very dangerous area of L.A. but, it's crimes are averaged out with the rest of the city of Los Angeles.
Same with Southeast San Diego..
I seen in that other S.D. gang thread, that now there's a Home Depot, Starbucks, and Costco in Southeast now. Yes, there is now, but the Home Depot is right across the street from Greenwood Cemetary on Imperial Ave, thats not a bad area at all in Southeast... At all. The Starbucks shopping center and Costco are fairly new, so it looks nice, everything freshly painted and what not. But see what happens when you go South more (Ocean View Blvd) or futher East down Imperial. Imperial and Euclid Avenues are known as the "Four Corners of Death". San Diego has more known Blood gangs than Los Angeles and any other U.S. city. The most dangerous and known Blood gang in the U.S. is from Southeast San Diego and known from the streets to the pen, "Syndo Mob".
Also, the 2nd city in the U.S. to get the gang injunction was San Diego.
The 2nd gang on the list was Syndo Mob (From San Diego).
(First was 18th St. in Los Angeles)
The biggest Mexican Mafia police bust took place in San Diego, "La eMe" (Southern California Mexican Mafia) members in the Mexican Mafia (most dangerous prison gang throughout California) have a majority of members from Logan Heights, San Diego. The majority of "La eMe" members are either from Logan Heights, San Diego, or East LA, Los Angeles.
Two of the most notorious Crips gangs in California are from Southeast San Diego, Rollin 40's Neighborhood Crip, and Westcoast Crips.
The San Diego - Tijuana Metro area is one of the most dangerous in the world.
