Crime in San Diego
Of the little crime in San Diego, is the crime concentrated in a certain area, or does it happen sporadically all over San Diego?
Does San Diego have a gang problem or has a strong gang influence?
Also name the bad areas if there really are any. I cannot imagine if there could be a "real ghetto" in such a large city with low crime. What I mean by "real ghetto" is like the ghettos of Philadelphia, Detroit, Miami and any other high crime cities.
Thank you for any responses.

There are no 'ghettos' in San Diego, but as with all west coast cities, there are barrios, and older neighborhoods with crime problems.
The gang presence exists, but it is not strong, except for a very few specific areas. Even in many of the areas with well-known gang problems you would have to know what to look for to see it.
Overall crime in San Diego is mild and as it relates to regular people, tends to be concentrated around vehicle crime.
The subject of crime has been discussed ad nauseum in several recent threads - I would advise you to take a moment and re-read some of the older posts.

Westcoast barrios are ghettos. It's not like the Eastcoast ghettos.
Gang activity is there but it's not like L.A.
Crime is usually low compared with other large cities. Vehicle theft is probably the only crime that has been high for years. Compared to places like Philly and Detroit, there's nothing like that in San Diego.
Read some articles from SignonSanDiego (SD newspaper). It can give you a good picture of what the crime is like in San Diego.

Violent crime has in San Diego has always been low compared to the national average (except maybe in the early 90's). Property crime in San Diego is slightly above average, especially auto theft. I've lived here for 10 years and from watching the news/reading the Union Tribune, crime trends are in an inconsistent pattern with time and areas. For example, 2003 and 2006 were the most violent years in San Diego out of this decade (2006 was actually the highest), while 2007, 2005, and 2002 were more quieter years. Also, different areas have concentrations of violent crime and gang activity, especially murder, during a certain time. In 2004, a lot of the gang homicides were reported in Encanto. In 2003, it was City Heights. In 2006-2007, it was San Ysidro/Otay Mesa or Mira Mesa.
The other thing I wanted to mention is the difference between the crime rate of San Diego proper and that of San Diego County. The media tends to focus on the city of San Diego being safe per capita (ranked #4 safest in the U.S.) and gives the city a lot of credit for it. However, the San Diego metro area as a whole is ranked #130 most dangerous metro out of about 310 metro areas, which still isn't bad, but is in the upper 50% of the most dangerous. This is because there a lot of cities outside of San Diego city that do have a high crime rate like National City, Chula Vista, El Cajon, Spring Valley, Oceanside, Vista, and Escondido.

Where did you read or hear about this? Like you said, the media only focuses on the city.

Yeah like Bunky39 said it is going down hill. It's still a safe city but if you just go through other post things are getting back to how they where around 2000.Auto theft, movements in the drug trade, gang presence is increasing in some areas, and "crimes you might not see anywhere else."It might be best if you pick a certain area in the county we can help you better.SD is a big and diverse county.

I had a feeling someone would ask, so here it is:
2006 Metro Area Violent Crime Rates
This is 2006 statistics. 2007's is not available yet since this year isn't over yet.

Anchorage is a big surprise. Kind of weird to hear violent crime in Alaska.
Just to show that crime can happen anytime and anywhere in San Diego, a 62 year old was killed in his apartment and last night a guy opened fire on 6 people, killing one. Police shot and killed him on 805. Both of these incidents were in Normal Heights.

It makes a little bit of sense for ANC to have a steady crime rate. What is there to do in ANC?Not much, might as well commit crimes. This weekend has been very very violent.About 4 shootings in the city(One was an OIS of course)we had a violent robbery down here in the Sbay, and the security guard downtown that played "crooked cop".
