Hi everyone,

Just moved to San Diego and I like it SUNNY (and hot), and really hate cloud/gloom! I am looking for houses, and I am really wanting to avoid June Gloom and the marine layer as much as possible. Can someone please tell me how far inland you have to go to mostly avoid it? Is Mira Mesa far enough inland (including the West side)?

I already read one post on this, but it didn't really answer the question, or if Mira Mesa is okay. I want to be fairly close to UCSD, but don't want to deal with June Gloom, so am wondering how far inland I have to go.

Thanks!

West side of Mira Mesa still get May Gray and June Gloom. I think you have to be east of the 15, or at least east side of Mira Mesa to completely escape the marine layer. West side of Mira Mesa isn't "too bad". It's definitely nothing like Sorrento Valley and La Jolla. The Marine layer doesn't last too long on the West side of Mira Mesa but it does exist.

I'm not sure about Clairemont, since I don't live there. But seeing how close they are to the coast, I think it should be similar to West Mira Mesa on the Eastern Clairemont and I'm sure Bay Park/Bay Ho will have plenty of marine layer/June Gloom.

~1-1.5 miles, just west of I-5 is typically the divider.
The only major place where layer is most significant, imo, is the La Jolla peninsula, its epicenter.

Yeah, it's like a wall there around I-5. I've posted photos of it before. I love La Jolla and we we originally were going to buy a place there but SO glad we didn't. Much prefer the sunnier weather.

Just going in a few miles makes all the difference in the world. And I like being in just a few miles as you get the best of both worlds with it being always sunny and avoiding the hotter temperatures once you go further in.

But from the sounds of that, you might like being East of I-15 where it gets much hotter.

15 is usually the cutoff but some days it goes all the way to the peaks running parallel to Mission Gorge Rd.

Stay east of 15 if you want lots of sun.

Yes, the Marine layer does reach into Mira Mesa especially the west end of Mira Mesa (closer to the 805) but even on the east end of Mira Mesa and into Scripps Ranch still gets it though less often. Honestly, to get the cooling effects of being closer to the ocean is one of the reasons I bought in the west side of Mira Mesa. There are some really nice houses in the northwest part of Mira Mesa which are 20 years newer than the rest of Mira Mesa and right on the edge of open spaces like Lopez Canyon and Penasquitos Canyon. They're close to the ocean, close to open spaces, far enough away from the freeways to not get any noise but close enough to be convinient, and really the only downside is you have to drive to get to stores. That's not very difficult though.

I'm at the east end of Penasquitos, near I-15. Lately, we often wake up to a clouded-over sky. Generally the sun comes through sometime from 9 to 11 AM. This is a bit unusual, though. Most often at this time of year we'd be waking up to sun, and the days would be hot (80's or 90's).
