When we lived in Pacific Beach we used to put guests up at the Diamondhead Inn on Diamond St right on the boardwalk, on the bluffs overlooking the beach. I just checked, and it's still there, and still with good rates. Short walk to all the little bars and restaurants, and the hotel has kitchenettes. It's a small hotel, nothing fancy, but the location is great. The airport is not exactly close, but you can get there within 25-30 minutes.

If you are more bent towards downtown, I stayed at the Days Inn near Pacific and Grape last March for a weekend, it is in your budget.

Lafayette on El Cajon Blvd has a cool young/hipster vibe and is cheap.

I'm seeking kind of the same question, what is a super budget hotel in San Diego that is not that bad? I don't need to be by the beach. I'm just a self employed single guy that will be down in SD on business periodically for 4-7 day stays, and I'm looking for a cheap place. But not a dive. Just a clean, quiet place to sleep. I lived in SD for 7 years so I know it pretty well.

Priceline and Expedia have a lot of hotels for less then $60 a night. Not sure how dumpy they are. Some as low as $35 a night. Travelodge, Days Inn, Howard Johnson, Super 8, Ramada types. I don't want to stay in the South Bay or too far east like El Cajon.

The chain hotels in SD for budget are pretty ghetto.

My parents liked the Somerset in Hillcrest for a while. I think if you are creative with Priceline you should be able to get rooms in nice Gaslamp hotels for motel prices - especially this time of year.

Pacific Shores Inn (San Diego, CA) - Hotel Reviews - TripAdvisor

It's not really that close to the airport but its close to the beach. This is the best place I have ever stayed in SD. They are nice and the rooms are good sized and clean. If you ask for a 2nd floor room, on the end, you'll have a ocean view.
