I have been enjoying the sites in Idyllwild over the last year and have been wondering if there is anything similar in terms of seclusion that is less of a drive.

I have been to Laguna campground but would prefer to find something more secluded than the average campground where you are withing sight/earshot of the next site.

We've enjoyed William Heiss County of San Diego Park up before you get to Julian on the Hwy 78 and also Green Valley Falls Campground in the Cuyamanca State Park North of Descanso on Hwy 79. Both might be a little crowded in the summer, but now that its a little colder they might be more "secluded." The river that flows through the granite rock at Green Valley Falls is a popular swimming hole in the summer time but be careful because it is slippery as hell.

If you want secluded, go out on The 8 to Pine Valley, get off on Pine Valley Road and turn left and then another left turn on Hwy 80. After a couple of miles you will go over a bridge once you get to the other side of the bridge, turn left on Pine Creek Rd. Take this one lane road through the hills and canyons all the way to Mt Laguna and you will be amazed at the beauty of our mountains. You may pass a car or two but usually you don't encounter anyone down this paved but off the beaten track road. You may find the road scary because there are certain points where you are driving on cliffs on the ridge of the mountain, but don't worry it is safe. I've seen a few people just set up camp up there without permits away from the campgrounds.... So that might be your "secluded" answer.

Yes, a bit over an hour away. But not as far as Idyllwild: Cleveland National Forest - Indian Flats Campground
