The only thing worse than a little yappy, nippy dog is its owner who thinks it won't hurt anybody or anything 'because it's just a little thing'.

You are incredibly uninformed. Both I and my dog have scars produced by Chiwawas. You simply couldn't be more wrong. And nasty Chiwawa owners are amongst the most inconsiderate, dumb people on earth.

OK, I cede the point..............Yappers are much more dangerous than Pitbulls!!!!!!!!!!

I hope you were able to find a place. I agree with you, OP. My dog is a lab mix, sweet as sugar, older, mellow, almost never barks, and is the most gentle dog. It took me 4 months of hard hunting to find a place that would take him. The people upstairs have a yappy little dog that *never* stops barking all day, and is very busy trashing the yard piece by piece. I don't even want to know what he is doing to the inside.

I have a dog and love animals.

Having noted that, some 4 years ago I adopted a no pet policy for my rental properties. In 2 of my rental homes, dogs had literally ruined the hardwood floors and carpeting.

Dogs are about annoying as smokers are to some tenants. Barking regardless of how long or how loud damages the ZEN in an apartment complex. I am thrilled to see many places not catering to dog owners. Not to mention the STENCH that comes from having dogs in close range. Dog smell makes me gag. It is something I just can't get accustomed to.

Discrimination comes in all forms. Smokers pet owners race sexuality social class etc. These are things that makes America tick.

This is what happens when you support a ban culture OF ANY KIND. Eventually it will bite you in the apple.

Maybe if people were more considerate to their neighbors and people in general there would be a wider range of acceptance for different lifestyles but we as a nation are incapable of doing this at the moment. This is what happens...the world according to.....whomever dictates at the moment.

As annoying, yes, they can be.

But the issue with smoking neighbors is health. Noisy dogs are annoying, but I don't think anyone's found it to be detrimental to health. Well, to mental health, maybe ...

You've never had a muscular, blockheaded pitbull doing its best to end your life...have you??? That is the reason many apartments ban big dogs.

Lack of sleep due to barking poses health risks.

So-called "pitbull terriers" are not necessarily particularly big dogs. Stafforshire terriers (the most common "pit bull") are less than 40 pounds--not much larger or heavier than a Cocker Spaniel. Bull terriers may get up to 85 pounds, but are normally less. A Labrador male (the most popular breed in America), in comparison, normally runs heavier than a bull terrier.

That's why when "danger" is the issue, landlords prohibit by breed, not by size.

We owned a tenant house in Boston & in addition to damage done by dogs (actually, it was more lazy tenants, who wouldn't take Fido for a walk in the snow/cold/dark & let him relieve himself on my floors), it was more incessant barking & tenants screaming at their pets to be quiet that forced me to make my bldg no-pet. I guess I assumed noise & the threat of fleas (which can be far worse in some locales, like the southeast) was the 2nd most prevalent reason. And, with cats, I found most weren't as clean as I was with mine... people leave unclean cat boxes all week long & toss it at the end of the week... yikes... the entire apt wreaked & so did the hallway when they opened their doors... I simply don't know how any human being could live this way.

But, someone mentioned it not being a health hazard & I disagree. I have asthma & am also allergic to dogs. No matter how well any apt complex has cleaned a carpet before I've moved in, the smell of dog on the carpeting & the skin flakes or whatever makes one allergic has always been a breathing issue for me. I use the floor for exercising... I hate when I'm doing yoga & can smell unclean carpeting. Of course, I try to rent without carpeting, but those flats are harder to find anymore. I can't be the only one that has that problem.

I don't know about SoCal, but in Denver, I found that more upscale places allowed larger dogs. I'm unsure why... maybe it's as simple as they just charged larger pet deposits & monthly pet rent. For the locals, could that be the case here, too? It's not something I've ever checked into.

Good luck OP on finding a rental.

Cite? (Not that I disagree, but my point was that second-hand smoke hazards have hard research behind them.)
