eh, my DH used to work at the west end of scripps poway parkway and it definitely took more than 20 minutes to get to the beach from there anytime there was any traffic, e.g. after school. We live in UC and it takes between 10-25 minutes to downtown La Jolla most days, usually is 15 minutes. Yes in summer La Jolla Parkway gets backed up but if you have any sense you don't go that way.

It does take me about 20 minutes most anywhere I go from home, part of the reason we picked UC is because it is so accessible to everywhere and it makes my husband's commute so easy. However, I have no desire to go up near CV/Del Mar when the fair is on or during rush hour unless I'm going to the fair.

OP, we came here supposedly for a two year contract. That was 15 years ago.

Ok, based on our SD friends' advice matching up with info provided here, I think we are dialed-in to the public high schools of Torrey Pines and Canyon Crest Academy in order to live in the areas close enough to the coast to get the climate we desire.

Unfortunately, I don't understand the boundary differences between the two high schools which would determine where we hunt for a house. Roughly, it looks to me that the two schools draw from exactly the same towns/neighborhoods except that Canyon Crest includes Encinitas?

Also, I'd appreciate objective/subjective opinions between the two schools academically and even socially.

Don't rule out Sabre Springs or Penasquitos. They are close to the 15 and 56 for easy access to the beach/city.

You may have already found your answer to this, but CCA and TP are both part of the San Dieguito district. CCA is lottery entry only. If you don't get into CCA, you go to your "home school" (either TP or La Costa Canyon, which is in south Carlsbad).

Yes, it is considered a very good district. My kids won't be in the district schools for a couple more years (we're still elementary), but people we know have been happy with the schools. The district passed a major bond initiative for campus modernization (and the new middle school another poster mentioned); you can see the plans for all the campuses here: San Dieguito Union High School District - Master Plans . I can't speak to how the district compares with other high schools you mentioned in the original post, though. For what it's worth, my sister and her family may be moving to the area and schools are their primary consideration for where they want to live, and they've also zeroed in on San Dieguito. (For a house, they're considering areas from the La Costa area of Carlsbad--which has some excellent elementary schools and also feeds into San Dieguito, but the commute is probably too long for you--down to Carmel Valley).

Yes, Cardiff has its own elementary schools but at JR High and High School, they feed into San Dieguito Union. I haven't been out anywhere for a while, but the water's finally warming up so it won't be long!

I forgot, are you in Cardiff? Hit me up next time you go out, I'm right off Mackinnon. The water is definitely warming up. I need to get a different suit b/c I'm getting a bit hot in my 4/3
