Anyone have any good info on San Marcos High School? They just completely rebuilt it and it looks amazing, I read it has good test scores and good academics. I am more worried about the social.

My niece lives in small town Georgia and is probably coming to live with us for school next year. We are in SMHS district. She is really sweet and outgoing, but definitely a southern accent and from a small town. Wondering how hard it will be for her in that environment.

Any ideas or suggestions?

It will be an adjustment, but SMHS is a good school- academically and socially.

Similar to San Diego, most of the people in San Marcos are not originally from the area. SM had 4,000 people in 1970 and currently has 85,000. About 30,000 of those people moved in post-2000. My point is that the majority of people are transplants, usually from all over the states (and the world to some extent). I don't think the southern accent is going to be a problem and will likely be seen as a novelty, rather than a reason for bullying. My closest group of friends were born/raised in every region of the US. There were very few native San Diegans.

SMHS offers a nice social environment because of its relatively diverse demographics. You have a sizeable number of affluent families, but no where near the amount that creates a privileged, entitled OC style high school. Similarly, there is a number of hispanic, English learners, but it's definitely not a barrio school. It's an interesting social mix that is tied together through a spirited school body.

Her main adjustment will be the large school population (~2,500 and growing) and the different demographics (roughly 45% latino, 42% white, 10% asian, 3% african american).

What year is she? Is she taking advanced placement/honors?
