Guys if I were to shack up in gaslamp, are there any free residential parking? Or is it all pay to park?

Are there other neighborhoods nearby w free street parking for residents?

Not that I'm aware of. You'd have go north of Little Italy, or maybe east to East Village, to find free parking. Some of the condos may have a parking space, but if you're sharing with someone or sub-letting that person is probably going to be using the assigned parking.

There is a small amount of free street parking, a very small amount, but you'll notice there are a hell of a lot of people hunting for it so your odds of getting it are about a snowball's chance in hell. Well, slightly better than that but only slightly.

Free street parking is available in the east village, little italy, and barrio logan in a limited capacity, but gaslamp is almost entirely metered. I can't think of one street that is not metered during the hours of 8 AM and 6 PM.

Will you need your car daily? Getting around downtown is easier on public transportation.

I worked in the gaslamp last night, and found only one meter after driving around for 30 minutes. It was a mile away from where I was working, and some of my co-workers had to park at 12th & Imperial. This was at 5:00, and normally I don't have a problem finding a meter at that time, but the traffic was really bad.
