What part of La Mesa are you thinking of purchasing property in? There are different parts of La Mesa.

Nice area. Schools can be spotty. The area up Summit Dr. is called Windsor Hills and is a poor-man's La Jolla. The only thing you need to watch out for is the area just to the east of Helix High, Lowell, Yale & Normal st. There is a single block of apartment complexes (Schoolridge drive) that is loaded with section 8 and displaced Southeast San Diego gang trash.

La Mesa has seen an increase in crime over the years, lot of property crime and armed robberies. The city used to be safer, I mean the 7 eleven on the corner of Parks Ave just got robbed last week. This never used to happen, you never heard about any crime coming from La Mesa, but it's like every week or so, something goes down now. I think a lot has to do with University Ave-El Cajon Blvd connecting SD to La Mesa and bringing in outside criminals into La Mesa proper. The whole area on University has really gotten worse, the area is starting to look really ghetto. When I was a kid, I thought it just looked normal to me, but today it's like a little hood especially over by Helix High and La Mesa middle. All kinds of ghetto children running around acting all crazy at the same time being unsupervised riding bikes and scooters without helmets on Uni Ave.
The other side of La Mesa (newer area) is still nice though, it's starting to age, but what can you do?
