How is La Mesa? Is it too crowded? Are the people nice? How is the crime rate? Would you move their?

Compared to other cities in the County, it's not that crowded. As for crime rate, if you look at the La Mesa page on City Data, you can see the crime rate go up every year. I don't know how accurate these actually are, but they seem pretty close.

My above post contains a link to a PDF Crime Rates document from the San Diego Police website.
You won't find more accurate information than this.
These San Diego Police documents show the total count of various types of crimes, broken down by neigborhood, for the past year, and for previous years.
Here is the link:
Crime Statistics/Maps | Police Department
The above website also has historic San Diego crime rate documents going back to 1950.

I live very close to the western edge of La Mesa which is the 'rough' side. La Mesa is a nice, middle-class city. It is really pretty contiguous with San Diego so it is fairly urban. There are also some very quiet and suburban neighborhoods too. I would move there in a heartbeat, the downside is the traffic on the 8.

I lived in La Mesa (by Lake Murray) for 4 years. It was a very nice town to live in and I rarely saw problems. The owner of the house sold shortly after I moved out and I could not believe the price he got for the little house he had. Perhaps with the market dropping a bit, the prices will be more reasonable.

I guess it depends on where you are in La Mesa. I know a couple that lives down there, off 70th street. Their tract is older but relatively well kept. The drive from the I-8 exit to their tract looks like Tijuana though.

La Mesa has it's own PD, so it won't be included in SDPD's site.
On a side note, SDPD's crime stats are questionable as there have been concerns regarding the PD not reporting crimes. So that is something to take into account.

What is best about La Mesa?
I am looking to purchase property in La Mesa, and I would love specifics about neighborhoods, trolley stations, walking distances to cool stuff and the people. I am looking for diversity (ethnic, age group, etc) and I am looking for safety and friendliness. What are the best things and worst things about La Mesa in your opinions? I am also looking for a progressive, service-to-community oriented, mutli ethnic Protestant church. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Thats a bit tough because the areas with more racial diversity in La Mesa tend to have much higher crime. Most of La Mesas neighborhoods though are nice and affordable, and transit runs pretty much anywhere.
