I'm not sure what you mean by culture, but lacking ethnic diversity?

You know those are well known cities right? Other cities like Denver, Seattle, Portland, etc. San Diego is comparable.

Yes, San Diego is well known as a military town, feels midwestern in many ways, and that's because many residents are originally from the middle parts of the country. What saves the city from not feeling 100 percent like a military/midwestern town are the universities. But it's still very much a red county.

Except for the fact that there are nearly as many registered Democrats in the county as registered Republicans, and I think there's a good chance that there will actually be more Democrats than Republicans by this November.

Registered voters in SD County, as of May 2008:

35.57% Democrats
37.60% Republicans

Republicans, be warned: You're about to lose your plurality.

Ummm...no I'd have to say that San Diego doesn't feel like a Military town at all,and we're a military family. Whoever said that it isn't diverse and has no culture, I have one thing to say, maybe you should get out more. I am white and love the diversity in the area of San Diego I live in "Chula Vista".
I also grew up in the Washington ,DC area...its so nice to live in an area the size of SD and have such a sence of safety here. Violent crime is LOW here compared to most of your East Coast cities like DC ,Philly, NY , Boston etc.
As far as being Liberal or Conservative what does it matter? Besides do we really want a local government like San Francisco ? I think not...a good mix of political leaning is a good thing. Not one party rule like in SF...there so left they make Bill Clinton look like a right winger !!!!

Yay! It's good to see someone else who doesn't think that SD feels like a military town.

And I also agree with you about the political leanings. This county is divided almost 50/50 between Democrats and Republicans. I tend to be more on the liberal side of things, but honestly, I like that we've got a wide spectrum of opinions here. It feels more balanced to me. San Francisco's political scene is sort of a "my way or the highway" attitude.

I'm a Navy Brat as well and San Diego does not feel like a military town to me at all. It's too big and spread out.
Now 29Palms, where my husband was stationed in the Marine Corps, definately feels like a military town

No, San Diego does not feel like a military town. The military presence is barely noticeable (to me) unless you are on the 5 and looking over at all those Navy ships near 32nd street.

I only ask and started this thread because I used to live in Pensacola Florida and to me that place somewhat feels like a military town. But at the same time its much smaller than SD.
