What do people here think about Oceanside? I live here on Camp Pendleton (it is safe and nice here) but never really spend much time in downtown Oceanside because...well, seems kinda sketchy at times. Do people in San Diego proper think this as well? Or do y'all think it is a nice beachy-type town?

It's meh. It is not nearly as bad as many say. It is a middle class city with less violent crime than it once had. Downtown Oceanside has a Dairy Queen, a few places to eat, a move theater, some hotels, a couple flashy eateries (it never had these before) some standard taco shop stuff, etc. It has a mix of architecture but one can see an obvious attempt to improve the town. It has a nice pier with a Ruby's at the end of it. The pier is worth walking out on but stay clear of the blood and guts of the many fish caught off the pier. not well dressed

To some extent that's true,but not in every case,as many posters have said that Oceanside,Chula Vista and some other areas are nowhere near as bad as some would have you believe.
I'd suggest looking at the crime stats and read what those who like the areas have to say then go for it,if it sounds good to you.
