I am planning a trip to San Diego and want to visit some of your lovely beaches, but when does it get too cold in San Diego to hit the water? I'd like to go in with my swimsuit but don't want to freeze to death.

The Mission Beach lifeguard shack posted the water temp @ 72 degrees last weekend. The water temp doesn't get much warmer than that. Maybe 74 in August. Winter water temps are typically 60 degrees plus or minus a couple of degrees.

You can comfortably go in the water during winter with a 4/3 wetsuit IMO

I always advise people to come in mid-September to mid-October as the beaches are normally warmest both in and out of the water and most tourists are gone!

Agreed on the cold factor and that doesn't even go to the issue of too many people, no privacy, not being allowed to drink, pollution, rocks cutting your feet (beach specific), sea weed, dealing with sand, and sharks. It is also why I prefer a balmy private salt water pool.

And kids are back in school too. That's a good time for Hawaii too.

I went swimming on new years day this year in Coronado. 59 degrees, about what the ocean is in Maine in August.
