My current lease expires July 31st and my plan since July 3rd was to move into a room that would be available August 1st. According to my friend, who lives there, the person who is renting the room right now changed his mind July 29th because his plans fell through to move to Texas. The landlord knew of the 30-day notice and knew that I would be moving in. However, this is all based on verbal agreements. Is there anything I can do legally? I'm getting screwed by this last minute change. If he would have changed his mind 3 weeks ago, I could at least find someplace else but 3 days before I'm homeless is ridiculous.

Call the landlord. Do you have a written agreement? If not you are out of luck unless you can prevail upon his good nature.

I would talk to your current management and see if you can extend a month. Unless they already have someone lined up to move in, I don't see why they wouldn't help you out and allow you to pay rent for another month.

This is a very good idea, even if you have to extend more than a month.
