This place looks really cool! Thanks!

Good hikes are Torrey pines and Mission Trails. You can fish off local piers without a license. Find a cheap board at a garage sale and learn to surf. Bike ride around Mission Bay or any local lake. You are one hour away from local Mts and you can camp on blm land for free.

You can also go watch the bike races at the velodrome in Morley Field/Balboa Park for free. Great place to pass a the evening, kids are allowed, and you can even bring in a your own food/drinks.

If it starts to get boring (which it won't), the soccer fields, swimming pool, and tennis courts are all within walking distance.

As mentioned throughout this thread, the best things about San Diego are the free outdoor things to do like the lakes, the beaches, the parks, the hilltop views and the hikes.

Don't forget to visit the new downtown central public library which has free events from time to time.

Also, the drive in theaters in Chula Vista and Santee are an inexpensive way to spend the evening. You can bring your own food and catch a couple of new releases for about $8 dlls per person/$4 dlls for kids.

Pick up a copy of A Foot and A Field in San Diego County and spend some time exploring the hundreds of great hikes and back country camping sites we have in this county. You'll quickly learn that San Diego County has dozens of different microclimates ranging coastal Mediterranean, to mountains, to deep desert and all points in between. There is a HUGE variation in rainfall and temperatures in different parts of the county which means lots of different flora and fauna communities. There is probably more natural variety in this county than in any other county in the US.

The Flying Leathernecks museum. As far as I know, it's free. One day when we're making a trip out to Harbor Freight (down the street), we plan to visit it.

I wanted to add a cool place to the list going here. Yesterday we took a ride out to the Desert View Tower. What a hoot!

Desert View Tower - DesertUSA

It is a few bucks to get to the top, but you don't have to do it. The gift shop has a lot of cool stuff, and the person working at the store was so nice!

It is about an hour outside San Diego, but a fun trip for sure.
