We are moving to San Diego (from Australia) and we have never been there! I need to find rental in a safe neighbourhood. Is Kensington (Montezuma/54th) near the school OK?

Montezuma & 54th isn't Kensington, it's the College Area. You also need to provide more information, starting with your rental budget.

Montezuma / 54th st is College Area. There are a lot of families in that area mixed in with college kids and it doesn't always make for great neighbors. You need to be VERY careful to research the school (Language Academy and Hardy are both good schools, Harriet Tubman is not) , the actual neighbors, etc.

Kensington is to the west and is far superior for families but is far more expensive and school choices in that area are actually much worse than in College Area. Most of the kids in Kensington send their kids to schools 20 minutes away in San Carlos (Green or Benchely) or private schools

You do not want to live here, unless you like chronic traffic/parking problems during college semesters, noise, and lots of idiots.
