Default Any thoughts on Eastlake in Chula Vista? Thanks.

Is it a safe place to live? Thanks in advance.

I have lived in Eastlake since 1993 and am very happy with it. For the most part, it's a reasonably safe area, schools are good, and nearly all the shopping you need to do is close by--I'd recommend it.

Very Safe. Eastlake is an upper middle class area. I wouldn't leave my door unlocked or valuables in my car, but the area is VERY affluent and populated mainly by upper middle class families.

Piggy-backing ...

Thinking to buy a house this summer. I work in UTC area but communities close to my job are either old (Clairemont, Mira Mesa), expensive (4S ranch) or both.

Bonita and Eastlake look very attractive - nice looking neighborhoods, new houses, ridiculously cheap compared to the rest of the city. (Big new 4br homes for less than 500k, vs. 700k in 4S ranch)

Two questions.

When does the rush hour begin/end? My hours are relatively flexible - can I get from a house in Bonita to UTC in 30 min if I leave, say, at 10 AM?

I'm white and it seems that Eastlake is largely a mexican neighborhood, can that be a problem?

At 10:00 a.m., you should be able to make it to UTC in close to 30 minutes from Bonita as that is not the rush hour. There is also the new toll road (125) to get there quickly too, although it does costs $2.00 or $2.50 each way.

Eastlake is not "largely Mexican". I live in Eastlake and am white as well. It is multicultural--Mexican, Filipino, Pacific Islander, Asian, White, etc., etc. I have never found being white and living in Eastlake a problem at all.

Well, I checked a few random schools in the area, and they all have 50-60% of hispanic kids and 10-20% of white kids. So either Mexicans have a lot more kids than whites, or whites are a minority there.

I see your point though, it's a lot more diverse than CV west of 805.

eastlake is a good area--a mix of white, mexican, asian, filipino. Cookie cutter homes but nicely upkept. Schools are not that great compared to other areas of san diego --particularily north county areas of del mar, poway, carlsbad etc. They are better than san diego city schools but still not great.

I did live in CV for a year and got out. I prefer north county MUCH much, MUCH better. Just easier to drive to other areas of the city--more centrally located rather than being so far south.

Eastlake is a very nice area even though I personally have not lived there but I'm quite familiar with the area, it is a mix of various ethnicities and I love it that way. I used to live in west Chula Vista now I live in San Miguel Ranch by the Otay Ranch Town Centre. Although schools all over in Chula Vista reflect a majority hispanic population, it is because about 20% of the student population in all of the Sweetwater Union High Schools live in Tijuana and commute here everyday. Love it or hate it that is the way it it. Chula Vista has a significantly lower crime rate than other independent San Diego Couunty cities, keeping in mind that Chula Vista is now much bigger than what it was before. All of the ethnicities in Chula Vista have contributed to the success of schools, communities, and overall vibe. Bonita Vista HS, Eastlake HS, Otay Ranch HS, Hilltop HS, Chula Vista HS, Sweetwater HS, and Mar Vista HS have their AP's in the 650-750 range which is considerably very good. Sweetwater Schools are overall better than San Diego City Schools and other schools because of how many different programs every single school offers, especially when it comes to the performing arts. I would always reccomend to move to Eastlake, no worries [member dls] the community of Eastlake is a very good one.

My in-laws and my dad live in Eastlake and I work there too so I'm down there quite a lot. It is very safe. If you're a big fan of McMansions and chain restaurants, you'll be in heaven. Everything is very new and now with the mall, it pretty much has everything any suburbanite might desire. They even have a Trader Joes now!

As far as "ethnic mix" goes, my husband grew up and went to school out here (along with his brother and sisters), they are white and never had any problems.
