San Diego is a wonderful place to live, but the really nice areas are not affordable to most of the working middle class. Prices have dropped some in the past year, but there are not a lot of great deals out there. Most people have to chose between location and amenities (i.e. size of home, yard, proximity to the beach, etc.) - so it depends on where your priorities are. There are some great pockets throughout southeast San Diego, but generally speaking the area bounded I-15 to the west, Univ. Ave. to the North, south all the way to Chula Vista to the and the eastern city limit line to La Mesa and Chula Vista are not very attractive and not as safe , though are nothing like the bad areas of most Eastern cities. Unfortunately, a lot of people choose to live in the far flung suburbs and commuting is a nightmare, and public transit here is not good and is expensive. My advice to people moving here is think small and live close to work. Choose based on where you spend most of your time.

This is good and accurate info. I live just north of University on the eastern edge of SD. While my neighborhood is nice, and the neighborhoods to the north and east of me are even nicer, the neighborhood just to the south is OK but not as nice, but go another mile or 2 and it just keeps getting worse as you go south into College Grove and Lemon Grove. We have our share of crime but it's pretty much limited to El Cajon and University and our neighborhood streets are quiet (except for the college kids).

Like any city, there are barriers, blocks, certain streets where neighborhoods just change from good to not-so-good. But as was mentioned, unlike an eastern city, you will never see burned-out, trash strewn blocks.

I disagree. Remember the wildfires not too long ago?

I'm serious. California has some strict codes that won't allow burnt out buildings. If they do, I've never seen any. Maybe some vacant homes, but that's about it.

I hope you didn't take it the wrong way.

Many areas of Chula Vista are very attractive and as safe as anywhere else, especially Eastlake and Otay Ranch areas.

I think he means to CV city limits, i.e. to Bonita which is a nice area.

For the record, University Heights has a low crime rate. Even among all of the neighborhoods in San Diego, violent crime and property crime rates are below average:

I think that people have different perceptions of what a ghetto is and some people might say this area is dangerous but to anther is safe and this is why you all are arguing about these areas. I my self have never been to the SD ghetto and only visited the city as a tourist so I can't really argue, The only reason I even posted is to make that point that some people have different opinions of what a ghetto really is.
