I was pretty sure that's not a new fee, since we've always paid that fee when we were there more than 7 days. This quote confirms it: "Figueroa said that the implementation is a pilot program, but the legislation has existed since 2012."

On Tuesday we walked into Tecate. There was a new sign in front of the offices at the border that said something to the effect that foreigners should stop at immigration. So we stopped. When the official lady heard we were just there for lunch, she waved us on. She said if we were planning to be there longer than 72 hours, then there'd be some paperwork. She was appreciative, though, that we did check in with her.

This has been discussed before.

If you stay for under 7 days you need to fill out a FMM (Tourist Card). The cost is FREE.

If you plan on staying for more than 7 days you also need the FMM but you must purchase the 180 day FMM for roughly $20.

You will need a passport or passport card. NO OTHER ID WILL DO AND YOU WILL BE TURNED AWAY.

At the moment there is no implementation of this program while driving into TJ. THIS DOESN'T MEAN YOU DON'T NEED ONE WHILE YOU ARE IN TJ.

You do not have to hand it in when you leave. The 180 FMM is good for multiple entries until the 180 days has expired.

That's all there is to it. I live in TJ 50% of the time.

Wow.

Go to any US Post Office and ask for a US Passport Application Form. You fill it out and call the number they give you for an appointment at your nearest Post Office.

You will be asked to prove US Citizenship. The form will list the valid forms of ID....Birth Certificate Prior Passport Etc.

$85 for the passport I believe. My Passport Card cost me $55

You can google the words "passport card," and it'll bring up the PDF form. Fill it out, print it out, get two passport photos taken, then call and make an appointment at a post office to process it. I got mine at the County Administration Building, but I don't know if they're still processing them. The cost is still $55, and it takes a couple of weeks to get it.
