Ive posted here before with a consideration of moving to SD after having a beautiful 1 week visit. I got a good feel of the area from the locals, the Navy folks, as well as the retired and hell even the homeless. I grew up in NJ, and moved to VA for 3 years for a better job position. I ended up resigning from that job since I burned out so bad that my health declined and got into a car accident from working so many overnight shifts. I decided to move back to the NJ/NYC area since July and was working for a NYC contractor. I recently got laid off, and with how wacky the unemployment laws are around here, I cant collect unemployment.

I have pondered the possibility of moving out west, and I think I am in the perfect position. Im 25 going into 26. Im honestly sick and tired of the winters. I get so depressed from the cold and the lack of sunlight. Its like every winter I go into a downward spiral, yet the spring summer and fall im fully functional.

My only question would be, has anyone had an improved sense of well being living in SD? I understand the economics and how everything is expensive out there, yes I know, NYC metro are is the same. But does the weather make it that much more worth it?

The short answer is yes, If you are affected by the cold and dark winters the sunlight here with be beneficial. SAD or seasonal affective disorder is well documented as a real condition. You can take vitamin D orally but the nice thing is here you don't have to. What kind of work do you do? Perhaps others can help.

I have been doing contracting recently. In VA I worked for a major contracting company that focused on parking lot and commercial sweeping as well as many other services. I know theres a company in San Marcos I believe so that would be a good job lead.

I was doing electrical contracting in the company in NYC, I did a little bit of everything from field work, to estimates and administrative work.

Before all of that I was an EMT doing ambulance work. I have also about 60 credits worth of college education so Im wondering if thats good enough to land me a decent job. Im not looking for the motherload, just something to pay the bills and the rent.

How much of a savings cushion do you have? You might want to search and read the other threads about moving to San Diego without a job.

Yup. I lived in San Diego for 7 years. Some time ago, I moved from there to the DC Area (my dad's in the Navy and got stationed out there). While I loved the spring and summer (fall was ok), winter was awful for me, as I have dreadful SAD, and wasn't used to the cold and snow for months on end. Hell, sometimes I was upset in spring or fall when it was chilly. After 3 years of that, we moved back to San Diego, and the weather improved my mood a lot. The main thing about SoCal that upsets me is how dry it is.

Not true. Do some research on the Internet. 85% of citizens of The US are deficient in D (and the other 15% -- they don't all live in Southern CA ).

I don't think the weather is worth it. I lived there for 45 years and I found the weather BORING. BUT I think NY weather is a bit (?) over the top.

If you are close to your family, moving that far away will be difficult. Don't underestimate that.

And please don't underestimate how difficult it can be to find a job in SD that will support you. ON THE OTHER HAND -- if you can visit for 2 weeks and put in applications like crazy -- who knows what might come up.

Weather is boring in a Kate Upton way - thankyouverymuch.
