They've also been the biggest bust over that time period too. Picked for SB every year and came up short.

As you hinted, the 11 season record do not matter. The games are poorly attended, so why should taxpayers have to pay for a failing entertainment business?
Other than not winning the Super Bowl, which is obviously a disappointment, what reasons are the Chargers a "failing entertainment business"? The team averaged more than 65,000 in attendance per game last season. If the "having a crappy stadium" issue is a reason why, that's something that is generally helped by the city a team plays in. There are FAR worse teams than the Chargers who have gotten plenty of public money to build new stadiums.

Including another team in the same city SD put up $300 million on a new stadium for...the Padres. But they don't want to spend money on a stadium that will bring Super Bowls and serious Olympic bids?

Sorry I meant to say "failing entertainment investment" I personally don't care about comparing the Chargers to other NFL teams, the problem is the NFL.

I hold a firm opinion that the use of (excessive) public funds to build a stadium is unethical for government.
The investment has minimal return and a significant proportion of money is pocketed by the NFl & Spanos family.

It's actually quite disgusting that taxpayers and city leaders allow this. This money could be going towards improving the quality of living in San Diego or spurring economic development through infrastructure improvements.

We are already "borrowing" money for infrastructure repair. Unless the tax payers are willing to shell out serious other bond money we need what available general fund cash we have just to fix the roads. I just don't see a bond passing 2/3 vote to hand over a billion dollars to a Billionaire family. Especially money originally earmarked to fix roads.

So, it's not like no one is unwilling to hand over cash, just that it's nearly going to be impossible. We can partially thank the Padres for that sleight of hand.

At least Petco Park initiated the redevelopment of East Village. 81 home games and 2.2 million attendees is a lot more economic activity than 8 days of football.

Rebuilding Qualcomm isn't going to do anything for San Diego. The Mission Valley location also minimizes business activity because you can't walk to bars, restaurants, shopping, etc.

Super Bowls and the Olympics rarely do anything for cities as well. It's all a money pit. We need investments that improve livability on a daily basis and strengthen long term economic vitality.

Spanos has already stated they want nothing to do with the existing stadium site. That's where the greed factor really comes into play. He wants waterfront or nothing.

Yep, which makes this all the more ridiculous.

Of course he doesn't. Big show and big $$ beat fun tailgating for fans anytime.

LOL, hey we would all like waterfront property for ourselves but most of us don't have that kind of money so we adjust our dreams. If he wants waterfront, then Mr. Spanos should pay for that luxury, which is what it is. Most of us think that the current location would work just fine. He's not going to get waterfront in Inglewood or Carson so its ridiculous. Off hand, can't think of any NFL stadiums are built on waterfront property. Looks to me like he wants out and has raised the bar so high that SD would never be able to accommodate, he won't give in on anything.
