We are moving to SD in June from MN. We are looking in Carlsbad and also closer to SD in Del Sur.
We have 3 kids, 9rys, 12yrs & 15yrs old. We need a SAFE community that is family friendly. Any insight from anyone who has lived in either of these areas? We are excited to be in warm weather & close to the ocean but keep hearing about a lot of crime in the areas. Is one safer than the other.
Also - is one more family oriented?

First things we'd need to know - budget? SFH or apartment/condo? Where are your jobs?

This helps us to give you better answers.

Also, what would you considered as safe vs unsafe?

Budget would be under $700,000 & SFH. Job will be in Carlsbad. Safety - it would be nice for my kids to be able to ride bike in a neighborhood with no worries.....
Thanks in advance for any input!

If you work in Carlsbad, I would recommend stay in Carlsbad. It's safe there, the schools are good there, and it'll be close to work There's no direct path to Carlsbad from Del Sur. Your commute would be a nightmare.

Yea stay in one of the coastal communities in North County if that's where you will be working. Carlsbad or Encinitas. My wife's commute from Encinitas to Carlsbad is only about 10 minutes at 7:30 am

When you say Del Sur, I assume you are talking about these communities: Neighborhoods | Del Sur Living

[Del Sur also refers to a desert community in LA County. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Del_Sur,_California)]

Or do you mean Del Mar? (Del Mar is quite nice and, in general, very wealthy.)

Overall, Carlsbad is definitely a very nice and safe area to live. Be careful about going too far north, because then you'll get into Oceanside. Even though Oceanside has some pockets of nice houses, it's pretty dicey overall. (I lived in Oceanside for a few years. It was okay but, if I had kids, I would not choose to raise them there.)

Keep in mind that there is the Coaster (COASTER | NCTD), which runs through the coastal communities.
