With a budget of 350-400k and the preference to not live too far inland:

- Chula Vista
- San Marcos
- Mira Mesa
- Vista (South)
- Santee
- La Mesa

Try Mira Mesa and even Poway, there are a few homes in those areas within your budget and the schools are good.

ROFL
O.P. could find anything in that price range in 70's in Coroando

Thanks for the insights! My husband and I are going to have to re-evaluate our housing budget. We currently reside in Arizona and that's the typical housing budget for living here. I'm not concerned about finding employment because we both have marketable careers - he works in academia and I work in therapy.
I did read your post on going more inland and that might be what we'll end up doing, but I think we're willing to rent if it means being closer to the ocean.
I also checked out the website sdlookup. And that's been beyond helpful.

I wouldn't be too confident about the jobs, even in "marketable careers". There's lots of competition for jobs in San Diego at every level, in every field.

If you decide to move my advise will be:

1. Rent until both of you establish yourself professionally in San Diego
2. Buy based on your established and projected income

That's kind of a California way of living.

Default we both have marketable careers - he works in academia and I work in therapy.

I wouldn't be too overconfident about that...this is a tough job market. What exactly do you mean by academia (does he work at a university?) and what type of therapy (physical therapy?).

Forget about your husband getting a teaching job, and for therapy jobs, check out the hospital websites for more information.

I appreciate your concern, but we wouldn't move if we didn't have jobs lined up. I already have been networking with others in my field and have talked with different agencies in SD. My husband prefers to work in a university setting but is able to work in private practices, schools, neuro-psych research. Right now, we just have to decide if we want to live in an apartment closer to SD and the ocean...or if we want to live more inland, in a house. We're also considering Oceanside.

No offense, but first you need to nail down something concrete in terms of employment. Then you can decide where to live based on your projected commute times.
