I live in the 92115 with 100,000 of my closest nieghbors. 30 languages spoken just a mile away from my house. My neighborhood is mostly white, homeowners with some college kids... some houses nice, some houses run-down. Nice people, we know almost everyone on our block.

I hope no one is too naive to believe that there is a "drug problem" in San Diego . Parents turn the other way all the time towards drug use and their kids. Believe me, this is not some sort of San Diego phenomenon it happens everywhere, and it makes no difference if you vote red or blue. I went to preppy boarding school and a private college for a couple years and have to admit that drug use is just as common there as anywhere else. In high school parents would let their kid have parties and they would know that drinking and drug use was going on. Just my 2 cents.

It's not about being naive. I am quite sure that everyone here knows that youth drug issues (with look-away parents) exist everywhere. However, certain issues such as the topic at hand exists greater in some areas whereas other concerning issues gravite more in others.

I have lived on both coasts and like things about both. The west coast especially SoCal is more materialistic, the east more status driven. But you can find happiness in both places as long as you be yourself. The difference in the coasts can really be noticed in your kids. My kids attended school in both New England and Socal. In socal it was all about keeping up with friends and having all the bling. In the east my kids were more down to earth and less materialistic.

Definitely depends where you live
In my neighborhood ALL girls 10 and up own not just one but several of the following:
Coach purses
Tiffany & Company Jewelry
Ugg boots
Chanel sunglasses
Lexus SUVs
The list goes on and on.
I'm not kidding starting at 10 years old! (except for the Lexus)
I am 45 and do not own any of these above items.
We are actually moving away from NJ so we don't have to keep up with the Jonses anymore.

I noticed that when I worked in Paramus(lived in Manhattan and Upper Nyack). People in Northern NJ are swimming in money and so lots of their kids become obsessed with namebrands. One day I was getting gas after work and the guy at the gas station tells me that I should trade up my E Class MBZ cause there's a newly designed model....to which I thought to myself "dude, you work at a gas station?"

It's the same thing here in the suburbs, just FYI.
