east coast - Fast talkers, fast walkers. Into status-private schools and country clubs. Like to project a look of intellectualism-wear wrinkly clothes and don't dye the hair, but have Gucci bags and drive Jaguar station wagons (I am not kidding, I've seen them here). Very Liberal, left leaning. Everything is old and run down and dirty ("Charming and Vintage").. I have had so many racists things said to me and around me here, vs. Jews and African Americans. The Street don't make sense, every block they change names and they go west then east then south-it's difficult to drive around.Colleges and university is important-people are well read and educated.
West coast, SD and Orange County- pro-military, conservative politics, into the Mall and shopping. Image conscious-big house, big car big hair. Lots of Evangelical Christians-Church is very important. People project a happy, easy-going attitude (some say its strikes of insincerity) Drive everywhere. Everything is new, old, historic things can be knocked down pretty quickly. People are very self involved- busy living life out for themselves. We're going to the beach with a magazine, maybe-not into intellectual pursuits. People are non-judgmental about race and religion, unless you are Mexican.

East Coast:
- liberal
- education is important
- fast moving, fast talking
- judgemental
- 'old school' attitudes
West Coast
- conservative (with the exception of the cities)
- education not very important
- materialistic
- slow moving, slow talking
- many midwesterners
- progressive attitudes

The east coast has become a burden and I can't wait to get out. Everything that was stated is so true but you both forgot to add rudeness to your list. East coast people are very shallow and rude.

New England
It's so hard to generalize the east coast (or the west coast for that matter, I'm assuming) when the area is so varied, from Florida up through Maine. Florida is very right wing conservative whereas here in MA it's much more left wing and liberal. We treasure and celebrate our seasons here in New England (but curse them when we're scraping the snow off our windsheilds in the morning, or dripping with sweat from the humidity). Many areas of New England are very old and run down, especially along the coast in areas that were ship-building, whaling, fishing communities. They are "quaint" but in areas, but just sad in others. These areas are also very low-income, with the exception of upper Cape Cod, of course, which is beautiful, expensive, with earthy people and untouched pristine beaches. The streets are very small and, as I read in another post, they don't make much sense. I have never seen a Jaguar station wagon up here, however. I would also say that, from what I've read, we care less about our appearance and about fitness. I'm also surprised to read the comment about racism, but I'm assuming that was a reference to more south, and not in New England. We pride ourselves in our open mindedness here. I'm very surprised and disheartened to read that education is not as important in California, as I'm a teacher and planning a move in several years to southern California.

I think the west coast is all about money, if you got it, you're in. the east coast seems more regal or status driven; as in I went to THIS school, I live in THIS neighborhood, I hold THIS job. I spent 3 months in Washington DC, I swear you can watch their faces fade when you say you went to __________(insert random, non-elite state college here).

What do you mean unless you are Mexican?
Are people stereotypical of Mexicans here, because I have lived here all my life and have seen more stereotypes and racial slurs being shouted out to othere ethnicities. The very few that I hear anyways, Southern Californians are a balance of liberals and conservatives. Both Los Angeles and San Diego are both party, classy, and charming cities as well as filled with many affluent people. I mean Los Angeles is a city with one of the largest hispanic populations, San Diego is a place where hispanics make up at least 25 percent of the population. Could you explain to me the exclusion of Mexicans in your very ignorant quote? For this case all Latinos, because you are probably so narrow minded that you cannot distinguish an Puerto Rican from a Mexican.

Be careful what you wish for Joyfull3 - there's plenty of "shallow and rude" to go around here...more so than the east coast in my opinion. I guess it depends on how you define "shallow and rude."

Rudeness is ample on the east coast as well and along with the weather it doen't make for a very good dish.
