I have been contacted by a possible new major business client south of Mexico City who wishes product from one of my companies. However they are wanting me to eliminate the excessive fees associated with shipping across the border. Now, my business and workshop are abot 20 miles due east of the Tecate border crossing and they have an existing business relationship with a private, DHL subsidiary only a few blocks into Tecate. How much hassle and safety threat am I looking at if I was to, once every 2 weeks take their order directly to this DHL facility for ship out? How long in time am I looking at waits at the crossing? The facility is next to the access road returning to the US. I note, however, from the Google maps image, a long backup in the US return. Is there a best time of day to go to/from. I still need to get a passport just to do this.

I'm not aware of any safety threat in Tecate. We walk into Tecate every month or so for lunch. When things got scary in Mexico, I wasn't going to Tecate but only because my business prohibited it. There was only one incident, as far as I know, in Tecate and that involved someone who was in the drug trade.

Your bigger hassle may be regulations that somehow impede or prohibit you from taking your product across the border. Be sure to check out all the ins and outs of that.

Yes, the crossing at Tecate is long if you drive in. But it'll probably be longer at Otay Mesa or Mexicali. Is your product physically small enough that you could walk it across? Pedestrian crossiing at Tecate is rarely backed up much, if at all.
