Not really IMO, North Pacific Beach just south of La Jolla probably work better.

is that north pacific beach area pretty safe from crime? I have been researching la jolla and raymond chandler lived there. He did say it was nice for older people.. and their parents lol . It looks beautiful there though, uc-san diego is there, wonder why there isnt much to do for young people

Yeah North PB is fine as far as crime.

UCSD (aka UC Socially Dead) is filled with a bunch of anti-social nerds living in a fairly bland area full of mass produced corporate apt and condo complexes and chain stores/malls. It's pretty quiet and boring imo. Many of the more social types that go to UCSD end up moving to Pacific Beach or Ocean Beach once they turn 21.

Downtown and the surrounding urban neighborhoods are better for young professionals but if you want to be close to La Jolla I recommend North PB.

good info sav. thanks for the help . is downtown san diego (gas lamp area etc ) much fun? I am thinking about 30 year old singles, they probably like martini/cigar bars, lounge type places.

Yes, I think the Gaslamp is very fun but it can be very touristy as well.

+1 for North PB...cool little stretch to go out on Turquoise, quieter than PB at night, the option to go into PB during the day by bicycle, and access to the Bird Rock, Windansea, and Village sections of La Jolla. Good location. Avoid the Gaslamp--not only touristy but douchey as well.

Probably not. Old School snobby rich. Even the shoreline smells bad now.

In addition to the gaslamp and downtown, other areas that might be more "fun" for 30 year olds tha La Jolla: Little Italy, Normal Heights, University Heights, possibly Hillcrest. I also really like South Park. North PB might work too, although there's more of a younger crowd in the bars in Pacific Beach. Encinitas is also very nice, although its more suburban. Great little beach community though.

N PB crime is mostly car break ins and drunk fights or lifting stuff out of people's yards.
