Hello,

I have questions about San Diego. Anyone with some time available and with kind soul could answer some doubts?

1 - Where would be a good neighborhood nice to live? Take in consideration that for me good neighborhood are places with parks and/or beach to walk and restaurants/bars. Would be nice to have good community but it is not a must.

2 - What would be the average rent for a place with 2 bedrooms, with good illumination and without carpets(prefer hardwood floor, avoid allergies) in this good neighborhood? And when is the best time in the year to rent?

3 - Comparing San Diego to Orange County what are the pros and cons?

4 - If this one is to much personal just skip this question. How much, approximately, yearly, would be a good wage to live well and save some money for retirement in San Diego today? Well, not retiring in San Diego, but save money for it living there.

5 - Bonus question(a bit general). How is living in San Diego? Do you like/recommend?

Many thanks in advance.

Best Wishes/Cheers,

Be more specific with your questions, and you'll get answers. You posted the same question in the Orange County forum, and got the same answer.

Renting = 75 Grand

Regarding question #1, there are too many neighborhoods in San Diego to narrow it down with that question.

Answers to question #2 are dependent on #1.

#3: I haven't spent enough time in OC to compare to SD, but I'd guess SD tends to be a bit more "down to earth"...

San Diego has many strong points, but rents are going up, up, up. There is very low rental and real estate inventory, so there is immense competition once you do find a place you like. (The summer is the worst time to look for a rental, but it is pretty bad year-round.)

There are plenty of places to retire with similar strong points that don't have the high cost of living. I would look into those...

Best Wishes/Cheers,

I'll bite, albeit with brief answers.

1. Point Loma or North Park. And I have always loved Hillcrest.
2. 2 Bedrooms, huh? I have a studio and pay $1000. A quick check of CL shows around $1800-2200 for a 2-bedroom that's decent.
3. I lived in Orange County for 10 years after moving from L.A. O.C. and S.D. seem rather comparable, except O.C. doesn't really have a "downtown" area per se. The beaches are very similar and both are good areas to raise a family. I made much more $$$ in Orange County for the same type of job, though. Maybe it has something to do with my field in Administration.
4. Is this just to cover yourself and your own expenses or a partner and/or children? In my humble opinion, for two people to live well in a 2-bedroom apartment and still save for retirement, you'd ideally want to make at least $75,000 - $100,000 per year. That's way out of my league (now), but I am a simple gal.
5. San Diego is safe and the weather is great. However, I am not the biggest fan of some of the snobby enclaves that exist here. I studied in England and would prefer to move to Europe one day.

My two cents....

Line up a job and where the job is located will help determine where you're going to live because long work commutes suck.

Apparently the OP already has a job, but hasn't responded to my question as to what area of San Diego it's in.
