I thought So Cal was liberal or something? But why is San Diego so conservative? Is it because it is a newer/younger city or what? Is it the history of the city here? Or is it becasue there are a lot of latinos/mexicans etc etc???

Any thoughts or ideas?

Thanks,

Jason

San diego is not a new city. It was actually the first city founded in all of california. (by western standards anyway....by the spanish in the late 1700's.) It has been constantly populated since then. And there are just as many latinos in LA, probably more actually than San Diego.

actually, it's a misconception to call san diego a conservative city when it is not. the city itself is actually more liberal then conservative and the county as a whole is a little more conservative then liberal.

reasons the city itself is more liberal is because, well, it's the city and what major city isn't these days? it's where all the "freaks" and open minded people live. suburbs are more family oriented and tend to be conservative, and san diego county has a lot of surburban sprawl, as well as a lot of military!

forget about san diego, and even the county itself, as being conservative. think of this county as more "moderate"

LOL! I want to know too.

I do feel SD is more conservative as well, maybe I am comparing to LA, Boston and NYC.

Latinos tend to be culturally conservative, but economically liberal.

But the fundamental reason why San Diego is not a liberal city is because of the military, the military retirees, and the military support industries.

IMHO San Diego proper is liberal but North County is mostly conservative (comes with money).

I grew up in San Diego, and found the military presence to contribute to the conservative politics. The social vibe is liberal. I live in L. A. now, and find it to be more in sync with my liberal views.
