Who remembers when Mira Mesa in the early-mid 70's? There were big empty fields all over and most of the schools were just "bungalows". I visited these in the late 90's and it was hard to recognize most areas.

I moved to Mira Mesa in 1973. There were two grocery stores, a McDonald's and a place called Tator's. (I think) And that was about it. We lived off of Westonhill on Duncan Road. Everything on our side of Mira Mesa Blvd was brand new. When the House of Ice was built life got a little better with at least something to do on a Saturday night. My sister and I recently went back to our old neighborhood and were shocked at how much it has changed. Our brand new house in Mira Mesa looked like a war zone and the neighborhood was trashed. Our old house in Clairemont Mesa was really nice!

If you couldn’t recognize Mira Mesa in the 90’s, you should see it now. Take a drive down the 15.

This is sort of akin to a lot of SD, but also Oceanside where I am from. I kinda can't believe how rural a lot of SD County was back then, even in the early 90s.

What up BB!

Yup you’re right, and it still is. Even to this day when I drive up to L.A. and OC to visit family, I am overwhelmed by how metropolitan/ big citiyish and dense everything is there compared to SD.

SD is very spread out, rural, and has vast amounts of open space especially off the freeways vs OC and L.A.

It’s like once you go past El Cajon off the 8, it’s country/rural, go East of the 15, same thing. Down to Chula Vista Bonita area, it’s very rural and dark. It’s like SD is one of the least cohesive places I’ve ever seen. You can be in an urban environment one minute, but drive a few miles away and your in a semi rural suburban setting like Lemon Grove and parts of Spring Valley.

It’s freaking strange.

And because of all the strict environmental laws and regulations that SD County has in place, most of the empty lots of land and rural areas are off limits to new development.
