Is there enough volume? Besides Qualcomm who might have enough employees living downtown to make this feasible? Does even qualcomm have enough?

AFAIK, the companies doing this in the bay area might have thousands or tens of thousands of employees at a given campus.

I was wondering about that too and was thinking maybe that is part of the reason they don't have shuttles, there isn't enough of a demand and/or people are spread out too much for it to work.

Shuttles are kind of an in-between compromise. Just leap frog straight to remote working. It significantly widens your applicant pool, too.

Yep -- especially in tech. If your managers can't evaluate their people with some metric other than "butt time in chair", you've got management issues. Managers used to the old way are usually the biggest hurdle but getting over it yields better results, higher retention and opens up access to additional/better talent. And remote working is a huge cost savings and quality of life improvement for the workers. A genuine win-win.

You'd be surprised how many still want to walk around and pat people on the head. I make my numbers each month or I'm out of a job. Pretty simple metric to keep track of.

There's nothing wrong with liking and wanting some type of connection with coworkers. It's just when THAT becomes the primary or even a major metric managers use for evaluation, things are going wrong.

I guess I keep thinking "dang, just WHAT are these guys doing that get these work-from-home jobs". I am a little jealous. I did not major in any kind of tech stuff, but am very good on computers and even worked a tech job for year in Carlsbad a few years back. Yes, I did almost slit my own throat having to work in a cubicle room with no lights all day, but that's beside the point.

I write DB applications. It's much easier to concentrate at home so long as the wife and kids are at work and school. Otherwise, I'll roll into the office.

^^ Yup, for me, the kids make it too distracting to work from home. I do it a couple of times per month out of necessity but prefer not to unless I actually have no intentions of working due to personal business but have to make my presence felt online and respond immediately to inquiries in order to be paid for the day without taking PTO.
