I'm down in SESD all the time. I've also been to Bushwick, East New York and Bed Stuy.

I will tell you this: I have never been afraid for my safety in SESD. There are no burned out cars on the streets in SESD. There are no bombed-out buildings in SESD. There aren't packs of dudes on the corners in SESD playing dice.

Go check the numbers yourself. I've checked. If you think that SESD has more murder, shootings, and robberies than even the good areas of BK, you are mistaken. There are neighborhoods in Brooklyn with more violent crime in a single month than SE gets in an entire year.

As much as you want to pretend that you live in Watts or Compton or Pico Rivera, it just ain't the case.

I have family in Shelltown, we go down there all the time. I spend a lot of time in Logan Heights too. My wife's one cousin lives in Skyline, the other lives off Euclid in Chollas View. I have skateboarded in parks, schools, streets, and parking lots all over SESD.

I'm not hanging out the streets at 2AM. There is nothing to be afraid of down there unless you are a fool playing a fool's game.

^^Exactly!! My parents live in Paradise Hills and I'm down there all the time. Plaza Bonita Mall is still a nice mall and yeah, there are some punk kids that hang out there, but what mall doesn't have mall rats? I'm amazed at how much better SESD has gotten in the last few years. They actually have grocery stores and banks now, when there never used to be any.

As you said, if you are loitering on the streets at 2am, then you are only asking for trouble.

As for Mira Mesa being full of gangs, I don't see that either. I'm sure they are there, but they're not a physical menace that you would see them hanging out in front of liquor stores or anything. I work Sorrento Valley, off Mira Mesa Blvd, and visually, I see nothing wrong with Mira Mesa. Yes, there are some older areas, but when you go north of Mira Mesa Blvd, you hit Rancho Penasquitos which is a nice area. Keep going east on the other side of the 15 freeway and you hit Scripps Ranch, which will always be a great area to live for families. Mira Mesa is only "Bad" in a small section, IMO
