Thinking of moving to San Diego, have visited there several times but not recently.

Suprised to see how high the rents are for a studio or even a room in shared house. Higher than even outside Miami, another place I am considering.

Used to be that once you got East or South of the City that rents dropped but seems the are not also high there.

Looking for a cheap, safe, private accomodation, room in private house or studio within 20-30 miles of the city. What areas would be best to look?

Also what is the public transport situation like, buses, vans, etc from South or East of the City into the City? How often do they run, what is the approximate cost and time to travel?

I will also be going into Tijuana periodically. What is the approximate wait time during non-peak hours for a white guy with passport back into the U.S. I took a look at the Sentri program and no thanks not going to give the Gov't any more personal info than they already have (from passport, and their spying). Thanks.

Without a Sentri pass, the wait coming back into the US from Tijuana can be up to four hours. And it has nothing to do with peak or non-peak, it depends on how many people are in line at the time. You just never know until you get in line........

What does "cheap" mean to you? What's your approximate budget?

I've thought of moving to Miami as well and have looked at the rental market there. I feel it's comparable to San Diego. I didn't see a large difference regarding price. Of course take in consideration no state tax in FL.... Regarding the culture well it's more diverse in Latin cultures in Miami. If you're going to be going to Tijuana.... South Bay is affordable.

You can find private rooms in the $400 range near Miami. I dont know what neighborhoods are like they are in, but there are many ads offering rental. Not so for San Diego, could not find much in that range. Maybe I did not search enough. Miami is a major airline hub, one advantage. Not sure how Miami compares to San Diego as far as quality and access to medical care? Thanks for your reply.

Forgot to mention I will be on foot. No car. The wait time for on foot cannot be that long, can it? White guy with USA passport.

It applies to being on foot or driving, and CBP doesn't care what color you are.. If you plan to cross frequently, I recommend applying (and hopefully getting) a Sentri pass. If you plan to bring back medication, keep in mind that you now need a prescription for some of them.
