Smile Obtaining Employment in San Diego

How difficult is it to obtain employment when I am not yet a resident? My husband is relocating (due to his job), but I will have to find employment. We were originally set to relocate to San Diego in late February, but my husband was able to request another month here in Las Vegas, with hopes that I would be able to have a job to go to by the end of this month.

I have been looking at craigslist constantly, and have been applying with the 'real' jobs on there, but not receiving any responses. I have also applied to jobs on jobing, but nothing. I have considered a temp agency, but I dont want to worry about "if they have something available", therefore I prefer a solid employment offer prior to moving.

I am a skilled admin assistant, accurately type 70wpm, and data entry of 12,000 ksph, with previous employment in the travel and insurance industries during the past 30 years. Employment has also included processing refinance escrows, working with MSDS sheets, and transcribing accident claims. I am not bilingual, but a hard worker with strong work ethics. I have had perfect attendance throughout my employment.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Contacts? Please feel free to PM me.
Thanks everyone!

I have very similar credentials to your. I was supposed to move to SD last summer so I sent out a bunch of resumes through Craigslist and Jobing and Monster, etc. I got calls within 15 minutes of my resume being received. I ended up not being able to move because my Dad got very ill. I am moving this July for good though. I haven't started sending resumes for this year yet. I wonder if it is possible that the job market was so much better last summer and that's why I got the responses. It's making me kind of nervous that you haven't heard anything back. You have excellent skills and anyone should be happy to have such a loyal employee. Keep trying. maybe you just hit a bad few weeks. Good Luck to you.

Default Jobs in San Diego

While Craigslist is great for used furniture, etc, it is cr*p for finding a job. I found a job out here before I moved here but I had to send out resume upon resume via many different jobsites until I found a job. But I have a more specialized skill set. I would look for a bunch more websites, and check out Robert Half, Officeteam, etc, etc. Don't give up. Let them know in your cover letter that you are moving with your husband. Good Luck!

I hate using your thread to ask my ? but I have a somewhat similar concern. I wish to relocate to SD by the end of the summer hopefully. I don't yet have a job lined up as I think it's too soon, but my ? is are many employers reluctant to hire from outside CA since we don't already live there?

I am, too, in the same boat as you all. I am hoping to move out there next month, but feel reluctant to put my resume out there since I am not in CA to interview. I have heard mixed advice, people saying send your resume out there and others saying it is a waste of time if you are not in CA.

I am feeling fery anxious, I think I may send out some resumes. It couldn't hurt, right??

That's exactly my thought but that's only b/c that's usually (not always) how it's done in NYC. They are very reluctant to hire outsiders who are new to a job field for fear they can't hack it. But I would hope SD is different.

So should someone rent a hotel for a couple of weeks so they can interview? I can't imagine just picking up and moving out there w/o a job and I can't imagine a landlord would rent to someone unemployed.

I have had good luck with CL in the past but it has gone way, way downhill in the past 3 years or so. You end up with a lot of bottom-feeder types on there.

Thanks for the input, lookingtoleave. I am worried about picking up and leaving without scoring a job. However, on the other hand what are the chances of getting a job while still living here in Boston..... UGH

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to apply? Not geographical, but company....I have no idea as to what large companies/corporations are near the airport area. I'd like to keep my driving commute somewhere within 15 minutes if at all possible.

My husband will transfer with his company, as an airline employee, but I really HAVE to find something before we move. I can be on a flight and out there to interview in just a few hours. We can't afford to live at a hotel for a couple of weeks while I hope to land an interview. I just can't seem to convince any possible employers in a cover letter that I REALLY WANT A JOB!! :-) Should I look at locating a headhunter? Do they really help or are they more like temp agencies??

Thanks everyone!
