I'm looking for recommendations for maybe beach location to take kids for few days in April. Not familiar with OC/LA coast yet. Any recommendations for a family break that's not overrun with spring breakers?

Great suggestion, eastcoastbias.

clarabella, what's your budget? How old are your kids?

In addition to Catalina, Dana Point and Laguna Beach can also be nice destinations with kids. If you don't mind driving a bit farther, Santa Barbara, Pismo Beach, and Cambria are all great.

Of course, this time of year, the ocean water is pretty chilly, so you might also consider some warmer locations for spring break.

Borrego Springs has hotels with pools and drop dead gorgeous scenery. Some of the hotels around Palm Desert, near Palm Springs, don't get too many spring breakers, and there is a lot to see and do around that area (my kids always loved the ariel tramway).

Joshua Tree National Park is also fun with kids if they like the outdoors, and there are vacation homes available for rent in the town of Joshua Tree, so that might also be an option to consider (most won't have pools, though).

Big Bear or Idylwild can be fun with kids too.

But, a lot of times when my kids were young, we'd just do a "staycation" for spring break and head out to a different beach, local attraction, or scenic area right here in San Diego County every day. Those were some of the best vacations we had as a family!

Thank you both. Kids are 10 & 12 and would spend week on iPads if I let them. Beach with pool works for us (Palm Desert last year I'll check out hotels at Catalina/above beaches

Palomar Mountain. It isn't beach, but it's a peaceful state park with lots of trees, not far from San Diego. The campground is shady & usually not crowded at this time of year, & it has showers & a network of easy trails, plus a pond & a creek. It should be green & full of wildflowers with all the rain. If the state park campground is busy, there are other campgrounds on the observatory side of the mountain.

Catalina sells out quickly. I tired to do a weekend getaway a few months in advance. There was one hotel with rooms available.

Another +1 for Catalina.

Also, at your kids age, the allure of the Santa Monica Pier is still fun. Not quite Santa Cruz, but its a fun little trip.

Check out Hamilton Cove condos on Catalina Island. We love staying there.

There are many beach camping spots. You can also rent an RV, they will park it for you and all you have to do is show up. Once done they come get it.
