As long as the military has such a strong presence here i don't see anything changing.

I urge you to do your research. Then explain how the military is a negative for San Diego.

well i'm not sure how to respond to a vague statement like that but...My point was not that there is anything wrong with the military it's the prevailing no-tax-paying, union-busting type of ideology that unfortunately comes along with it. Any large scale operation that is centered in one geographic location is going to provide jobs whether it be a part of the military-industrial-complex or just textile manufacturing. (and i would actually like to see numbers showing how many non-military people that are employed as a result). So by sheer job creation it is a good thing but its the other stuff i mentioned. So I guess if you are someone who is in line with that and you think that the gaslamp is a totally awesome scene then this is the place for you. but the original post was from someone coming from New York and were i to have come here from New York, once i got passed the better weather, i would have been really disappointed.

My question in more detail is:
1. What are the numbers of retired military living in San Diego? As far as I know military member with a "home of record" California pay taxes on their salary as well as property tax, sales tax, ect, ect. Where as military member with a home of record being Texas (for example) do not pay state taxes on their salary. However we do pay federal, state property tax, sales tax ect, ect.
2. What are the statistical figures illustrating the pro's and con's of having a large military presence in the area? And what does this mean to a potential resident?

You can't argue with that

Oh yes you can. Depends on your budget as to how close you can live to your job in LA. If people think San Diego is expensive, then LA is just not even attainable.
If you want a large city feel, then move to LA...at your own risk. Don't get me wrong. I like LA, but it's no San Diego and vice versa. Living close to work in LA is not as easy as the previous poster makes it seem. Traffic is a nightmare, all day, everyday.
I outta know...lived in LA for over 8 years. The money is good, the nightlife is better, but it all comes with a price, as does everything else in the free world.

I think some people need to take a long look in the mirror
I've lived in the SF Bay Area and San Diego and although I love my people in the Bay Area, people are friendlier and nicer down here. When I read some of these negative posts I can't help but think that the person writing it is the problem b/c I've usually had the opposite experience. Someone mentioned that while walking around they noticed few people smile. I always get into nice little conversations or what not in line at the grocery store and I'm not the one that starts it. Yesterday at Trader Joe's the cashier and lady in front of me were just shooting the sh*t talking about going back to CO and how they were both from Ohio and both had big happy smiles on their face. Then when I go there the cashier was friendly and outgoing to me, and that happens more times than not. All the people that work in my building, who I don't work with b/c it's mostly another company, always smile and say hi when they pass. I find it's so easy to start a conversation here with people. And I don't consider myself a particularly outgoing person just one who is polite and friendly to people. I really would like to meet some of these people that talk trash on the people here b/c based on many of their other posts you can get a good idea what type of person they are; many seem to have nothing but complaints and negativity.

If you met some of them, I think you'd be sorry that you did.
It's interesting how the complaints range from, "Everybody here is rude and materialistic" to "I hate San Diego because everybody is so laid back and they wear shorts and flip-flops all the time." lol... I mean - come on, people!
To those who whine and complain: Look in the mirror. It's not the population of San Diego that has a problem. It's you.

Funky this is not a personal condemnation of you but I have to say after reading many of your posts about SD you seem to hate this city and this county. You have "beat up on" SD many times. Why do you continue to live here ? If I hated any area that much I'd sure as hell move !
In fact I left Chicago for many of the same reasons that you complain about SD. Let me explain :
Chicago is FULL of mean-spirited, selfish, in-a-hurry, me-first, greedy folks. The traffic is THE WORST in the nation. Highest murder rate in the nation going on 10 years now. The entire West and South Sides are virtually no-go zones if your White. Read our newspapers and watch the Chicago news at night and see the daily murder and serious crime reports over and over again. Hard drugs are all over the city. Out of control taxes in the city, county and state. THE most corrupt politicians in the nation.
Gangs in SD bad ? ...... Come to Chi-Town and really see what a gang is ! Bloods and Crips tried setting up in Chicago and were sent back home to LA in body bags, courtesy of our home-town gangs ! Our gangs are urban terrorists. There is an under-reported Black on Latino gang race war going on in the high schools with 27 kids killed ON SCHOOL PROPERTY during daylight hours thus far.
SD is a paradise compared to a lot of metro cities in the USA. Unless you are living in the heart of Barrio Logan or Lincoln Park or some other no-go zone you can't have it that bad.
Don't get me wrong but you sound a litle paranoid and negative in general.
Relax and enjoy San Diego !

WOW! Funniest thing I've read in quite a while. Vice Lords huh?? Ive been to Chi once and thought it was amazing. Quite a swagger people have in that city.
I have been debating moving to SD for quite a while now and I think besides cost of living, nat disasters (fire/quakes), traffic it seems like my type of place. If you complain about people wearing shorts and flip flops all the time you suck at life and should move to Canada...

Actually, Chicago doesn't have the highest murder rate, just the highest number of murders.
