A lot of people say they want to live "close to the beach." After all, that's the vision people from outside of San Diego have of how we spend our time here -- always at the beach.

I'm curious how much time people who live in San Diego actually spend going to the beach.

So, if you are so inclined and currently live in San Diego, please reply to these questions in the thread below:

1. Area of the county where you live

2. On average, how often do you actually spend time on the beach (ocean only please and I am not talking about driving by in a car or on your bike, but actually being on the sand:

Daily
Weekly
Monthly
Yearly
Once in a blue moon

3. When/if you go to the beach, what type of activities do you generally do there?

4. During the time you've lived in San Diego County, have your beach-going habits changed or remained the same?

I'll start. I live inland (Jamul).

I go to a beach (usually go to different ones depending on my mood) about once a week, sometimes more during the summer months.

I don't generally swim in the ocean (I have a pool at home for swimming) and after my SD native husband's bout with skin cancer, we don't go to sunbathe any more, but I do enjoy walking along the sand and taking photographs at the ocean.

I've lived in SD County for over 30 years. I spend more time on the beach now than I did before I retired because I can go during the week when it isn't as crowded, and I also go to the beach more often now than I did when I had young kids.

I will be really interested to read everyone's replies.

Encinitas.

I ride by it a few days a week on my bicycle. Never sit on the beach or walk along it due to the effort it takes to get there and park or take a bus.

When the water temps get better I will be boogie boarding.

It's nice to look at and in theory you think you need it more than you actually do.

Live upper-downtown for 10 years
In warm season in the day, 2-3 times a month (but last few years less). In winter, once every other month.
Ocean swim, boogie in warm season
I generally go right from parking lot to water, with no hanging-out sand time, and back to car
Most frequented beaches: Mission, Moonlight, La Jolla Shores (better parking beaches)
Change in habits: Less interested this year in particular as pool swim more
I dislike beach hikes as very boring, though like tide-pooling (north of La Jolla Shores, Cabrillo)

Near Downtown.

Maybe 5/6/7 times a year.

I would say half the time I lay out, walk the beach and cool off in the water. The other half going to restaurant by the beach and then walking it after.

I've tried surfing once and paddle boarding a handful of times

I've lived in other places in the County- I've lived closer than where I am now and it hasn't changed my habits. I will go to Del Mar, La Jolla and PB frequently and never step foot in the sand.

I spent a year away from SD after living here for 4 years and I missed the beach probably once or twice in that time.

East Village.

It varies, but over the course of a year, maybe once a week.

Mainly do photography, going for walks (or both). Thinking about getting a SUP or something similar

I'm still learning the seasons in San Diego. Photography is better in the winter at the beach (better sunsets/sunrises). May and June have been terrible due to marine layer.

If I lived by the beach I would go everyday either to run or walk. Right now in east village, I'm like 5min from the water and I go by there most days (boardwalk connecting Hilton Bayfront to Midway).

At least 5/times a week...Dana Point...just got back. Sometimes I hit the beach at Trestles or south Carlsbad. Does DT Oceanside count b/c if so, I sometimes even meet friends there.

I go to the beach to exercise, gaze at Catalina/Rancho PV/down to SD county, see tide-pools, hike, meditate and relax. I do not use the water. I swim in a pool at my house.

I live in Clairemont (Bay Ho). Less than a 2 mile drive to Mission Bay. I bike around Mission Bay maybe 3-4 times a week. Good exercise for an old guy.

My primary reason for living here is not the beach. It's the weather. Today I had to meet a business associate in Rancho Bernardo at 1pm. It was 94 degrees. When I pulled into my home garage an hour later it was 80 degrees.

Coastal Clairemont is also very convenient to everything: beaches, airport, downtown, shopping, medical care etc. And when the mid-coast trolley is completed, I'll be able to trolley it to everywhere I need to go.

this seems hard to believe considering you didn't think last weekend was beach weather

Thanks for replying, but for the purposes of this discussion, I really am mainly interested in people who currently live in San Diego County.

Thanks also to everyone else who has already replied. I hope more people will reply, as I think this will be helpful for people who equate moving to SD with being on the beach all the time.

Cardiff Kook, you live very close to the beach -- how often do you get on the sand?
