Hi there,

I'm moving out to SD relatively quickly - I need to be out there by the end of September for work. I'm a 27 year old female looking to move out with my 2 kitties.

I honestly just want to live somewhere safe. I don't need to be in the city area. If anything I'd love to live remotely if possible. But I'm not too picky. Just need a place so me and my cats can start a new adventure.

I don't really want to pay more than 1300 for a studio or 1 bedroom. I'm looking for some suggestions of locations I can look at as I start to plan.

Thanks in advance guys, It's very much appreciated.

Christine

What area will you be working in, and what's your rental budget?

She already gave her rental budget but the area you will be working in is very important. San Diego does not have good public transportation like Boston and traffic is similar. Traffic is not as bad as LA, Bay Area or DC but it is still a factor just like Boston..

Options for pet friendly apartments for $1300 in the San Diego area are somewhat limited. Having two cats will limit you further.

It won't be impossible, but you're probably not going to be able to be too picky about location unless you have some flexibility in your budget.

Check Craigslist, Apartment.com, and Zillow.com to see where pet friendly apartments allowing two cats in that price point are most frequently located, consider the distance to where you'll be working, and then come back and ask us about the areas where you seem to be finding more options.

Tip: you can check the safety/crime situation around any address on crimemapping.com.

Don't agree to rent anything without seeing the apartment and the neighborhood in person.

Of course, much depends on where you'll be working and how long of a commute you're OK with. Can you let us know that when you reply? Perhaps we can help you narrow down locations then.

Good luck with your move!

With cats she won't have a problem finding an apartment.

Two cats and a $1300 max budget will still rule out a lot of options.

But, I agree that she should be able to find a place, as long as she's open-minded about location.

Finding an apartment with two cats won't be a problem, but she has to be willing to pay a deposit on them if necessary. It all depends on where wants to live.

I paid a $300 deposit on my cat, and this was first time in all my years of having cats that it was required. But it didn't bother me, and the cost was factored into my moving expenses when I was looking, just in case.

We can't recommend locations until we know the area you'll be working in--SD is very spread out and car-centric. Be aware though that the average rent for a one-bedroom countywide is $1700+. That said, it's not impossible to find places for less, but it will take some looking, and flexibility on amenities and location.
