Well, I love where I live (in a semi-rural area in East County). And, truth is, most people will tell you the same thing: they love where they live.

But that doesn't make it right for you.

I think all of the areas that were suggested above would be fine though. It really all boils down to where your husband will be working and what your budget can manage.

Not sure that will get you much unless in a less desirable place. Maybe a decent 1BR or below average 2BR...unfortunately.

There are some apartments straight up from the stadium but not a lot of running trails anywhere close by.

Mission Valley is a good place to start as renters, access to lots of shopping, all freeways feed into MV, trolley system provides transportation to downtown, Little Italy, Gaslamp, etc. And gives you a year to really get to know all the various towns/areas that make up "San Diego" , there are lots of them. And you won't get stuck living someplace you'll hate. I started out there when I first moved here, many years ago, and it worked out well. May have to up your budget a bit but I think it would be worth it. Rent in SD is high.
