That would really suck if it broke as a motorcyclist was passing over, that could possibly be fatal. I ride down that stretch of freeway alot.

Hopefully no motorist were injured.

Ugh. I remember getting stuck trying to go East when a crane hit the 163 bridge and the 8 was closed during rush hour. I knew there was an issue and stayed off the freeway, but all the alternate routes were jammed up as well. That was, what, 15 years ago? 20? Traffic volume has increased quite a bit since then...

Remember back in the mid-90's when that crazy guy stole a tank, and went up the 163 and surrounding areas driving over cars like they were toys.

He came down my street at the time in Clairemont. Crunched a neighbors motor home. Thank GOD no one was in it. I offered up my .50 BMG to the cops but the event was over at about the same time.

I was right in the middle of it, my office window overlooks it directly westward just a couple hundred yards away- what a mess! In fact I was at Presidio Park at 11:35 where I take my lunch everyday and was walking the hill edge and looked down at 8 just before I was going to head back to the office and it was stopped- with cars starting to go at crazy angles. It took 20 minutes just to cross 8 from Hotel Circle South to North instead of the usual 4- with cars exiting the on-ramp! I texted my office "something very bad has happened on 8 East!"

It was pretty exciting with the news helicopters circling our office building and seeing the cluster fook of cars angling back west whichever way they could. But then we lost water and air conditioning at the building so we ended up leaving a little early.

I was lucky- it took just a few minutes longer to go Hotel Circle North under 8 to 163 but my partner who only works a mile away from me at SPAWAR was unfortunately at ground zero of the carmagedon! It took him 1:45 to get home instead of the usual 15! Yikes! Everything was completely stopped from 5 west to OB south of 8

Besides the 8 sinkhole, there were three pipes that burst on Morena Avenue (affecting where I work at USD) and there was no water pressure at PB Elementary (where my child goes).

It's bad around here.
