Any very good suggestions for a recommended family-financial-wealth-planning adviser to advise on paying for college, home buy, older age, etc ??
Thank you.

Do you have a brokerage account? ie. Schwab, Etrade, TD Ameritrade etc. Your personal brokerage account knows more about you than anyone and usually offers these services for free.

I would try Nextdoor for that question.

I know a great one but they only deal with million dollar plus accounts. Let me know if you want it.

Thanks. Good idea and will do, but also wanted an independent assessment. If anyone has a specific name/group, please list up here.

Bogleheads is really the best board for that sort of information.

The problem with picking a financial advisor is that by the time you know enough to evaluate an advisor, you might as well do it yourself.

Thanks, but I was hoping to tap some local recommendations here, if anyone has a specific suggestion.

Listen to the Bogleheads recommendation. Money is my business. Please educate yourself to a significant degree concerning your money and how to manage it. Read everything on that Bogleheads site. Then read more. Lots more. Read and digest. Do nothing until you've been reading and digesting for several months, maybe even a year. Only after you've done this, should you consider seeking professional advice concerning a few discrete areas, namely tax planning, taking RMDs, and Social Security planning.

Whatever you do, never, ever give custodial control of your accounts to any broker, money manager, or financial advisor. Never buy whole life insurance (or any so-called "investment" with an insurance wrapper). And don't ever pay a AUM fee to any financial advisor; it's a massive ripoff. You'll be much better off sticking your loot in a Vanguard balanced index fund and letting it ride -- massive amounts of research confirm it. And if you don't know what some of those terms mean, that's purposeful. Research them. And I also suggest you do some research about how mutual funds and many "financial advisors" are thinly-disguised asset aggregators. They'll sign you up, only to stick your money in their highest-fee products -- and charge you dearly for this "service."

What, you think some financial advisor is going to generate alpha on your portfolio, over and above a low-fee index fund? No -- because if they could, they'd be running the prop trading desk at Morgan Chase, Citi, Deutsche, Credit Suisse, etc., and knocking down $10MM+ bonuses per annum.

Default Second getting educated

I have to second the advice of USDefault. Charging the fee on assets under management is the biggest scam out there.

While you don't need to become an expert in financial planning, you need to know enough to be able to sit down and craft a basic plan and then maybe bounce ideas off a professional. I'm not sure your specific situation but if have less than a million dollars in net worth, than leveraging quicken or mint will suit you just fine.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to shoot them over. I've been in the industry for 10+ years, MBA, ....
