Depends on the size of the rental and how far you want to live from the airport. Next to the airport, probably not.

As phrased, the answer is obviously no.

If instead you are asking whether any airport-close rentals are available for $1200, I think the answer depends on whether you will have a roommate. If yes, you may be able to get a small two-bedroom apartment or condo for your price with two people splitting the rent.

If no, your list of target properties is going to be very small, and not so great. For example, maybe you can rent a small bedroom in an already-small condo that has only one bathroom -- not something I would do. If you want your own place, it's simply not happening at that price, not even a small studio, in downtown San Diego.

If you must have your own place, the only way that rent works is if you can drive to the airport, and thus look south (e.g. Chula Vista) or east (e.g. El Cajon). Even then, you are right on the edge of the lowest tier, zero amenities, you'll be lucky if you get a parking spot, and you'll have a hefty commute. At the stated monthly rent, you are writing off huge swaths of San Diego. West of the 5, forget it, better double the budget to be anywhere near the ballpark, and even at double the rent it's going to be very tight as you approach the coast (and by "approach," I mean way off the oceanfront by many miles).

Depending on what your definition "with a commute to the airport" is, the answer is yes. However, it will be in a virtually zero amenities building built in the 1950s.

Virtually zero amenities means ask if there is an assigned parking spot; there may not be. Ask if there is a laundry room; there may not be. There won't be A/C or dishwasher in the apartment. A prime area for apartments with these features, or lack there of, is City Heights. Another neighborhood that might work is Sherman Heights, or possibly parts of National City. I'm not really familiar with National City so I'm just guessing.

If "a commute to the airport" means a direct bus route that's pretty iffy. I think the airport bus doesn't go farther than Downtown, so you need to take a bus to Downtown and then transfer to the airport bus.

Bottom line, the answer is yes you can find a place for $1200, but there will be sacrifices.

Just go to zillow and do a rental search. There's a bunch that come up for 1200 or less.
